UNITED PATENT QFFI JAMES WEIGHT AND JACOB 0. SMITH, JR, OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR CARDlNG-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,834, dated July 11, 1876; application filed May 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES WVRIGHT and J A0013 0. SMITH, J r., of Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clement Attachments for Oarding-Engines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This improvement relates to that class of carding engines wherein a feeding apron is employed above the cylinder, and in which the various parts are driven from the shaft of the main cylinder simultaneously by simply shifting the lever without stopping or interfering with the motion of the main cylinder, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings we have shown only as much of the machine as is necessary to illustrate our invention, and in said drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of card-frame with feed-table removed, and Fig.3 is a plan view of feed-table.
A represents the card-frame. B is the main cylinder. 0 is the doffer. E is the brush F, the feed -t able, and G the teed-apron, all constructed and operating in the usual manner. On one end of the main cylindershaft a is a driving-pulley, D, with a pulley, D, attached to or formed with it. The pulley D is, by a twisted belt, I), connected with a pulley, d, on the shaft of the brush E. The other end of the main shaft a has a pulley,f, connected, by a belt, 6,With a loose pulley, h, on the shaft of aroller, E. On this shaft is also a clutchpulley, i, connected, by a belt, k, with a pulley, m, mounted on a stud on the side of the frame. The pulley m has a pinion, 02, attached to it, which meshes with a cog-wheel,1, on the shaft of the doft'er 0. On the other end of the shaft of the roller H is a pulley, 1), connected, by a belt, 1", with a pulley, s, on the shaft of one of the feed-apron rollers, said rollers being on the opposite side connected by a belt, t. The clutch-pulley z .is moved to and from the pulley h by means of an arm, J, attached to a rock shaft, K, which is held in suitable bearings on the side of the frame, and turned by a lever, L.
By the aid of the lever L, the clutch-pulley i is thrown in gear with the pulley h, and then all the parts of the machine will be in motion but, by throwing said clutch-pulley out of gear, they will all stop except the main cylinder, thus affording a simple and efl'ective means for connecting and disconnecting all the parts except the main cylinder without thense of an eccentric, and without moving any shaft.
We are aware of Patent No. 41,462, and do not claim anything shown therein; but,
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a carding-engine, the combination, with the system of belting and gearing herein described. of a single clutch-pulley and rockshaft, with arm and lever, whereby the various parts of the machine may be started and stopped simultaneously by simply shifting the lever without stopping or interfering with the motion of the main cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
