Description

J. H'. SNHTH 8L E. SQUIRES. Improvement in Cleaners vfor Card-Cylinders.
Patented Sep. 10, 1872.
UNITED STATE-s PATENT (DEEIGE.
JAMES H. SMITH AND ERASTUS SQUIRES, OF RARITAN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLEANERS FoR cARD-cvLlNo'ERs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,185, dated September 10, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMEs HARPER SMITH, of Raritan, Somerset county, in the State of New Jersey, and ERAsTUs SQUIEEs, of Raritan, Somerset county, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement vin Card-Cleaners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I represents a genera-l view of the card-cylinder of a carding-machine with my improvement applied to it, and Fig. Il a side View, and Fig. III a sectional elevation thereof with mechanismlemployed in throwing cleaning-roll to and from main cylinder.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has relation to card-cleaners; and consists of an improved means for advancing and retaining the cleaning-cylinder in contactwith the main cylinder while the machine is in motion. lThis card-cleaner is designed to be applied to all carding-machines for which a card-cleaner may be advantageously used.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A
represents the card-cylinder, and B the oleaner. The cleaner here shown, as applied to the card-cylinder while in motion, is arranged below the latter, and, revolving in an opposite direction, runs the full-length of the card-cylinder A. D D represent stands having bearings, in which turn geared eccentrics C C, bored to receive the journals of the cleaning-roll B. The geared eccentrics are rotated so that the cleaning-roll may be thrown to and from the card-cylinder by means of shaft E, pinions F F, and hand-wheel H. The bolt and thumbscrew J hold the eccentrics in place when properly adjusted. The pulley G is set-screwed to the cleaner-shait and driven from pulley I. The surface of the cleaner B thus rotating, which it does at a higher velocity than the surface of the card-cylinder, and being covered or clothed with card clothin g, forming a straight brush of wire or other material, serves most efiectually to detach all adhering ber or mat-` ter from the card-cylinder.
What is vhere claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the cylinder A and cleaner B, of the geared eccentrics C C, the pinions F F, the shaft E, the hand-wheel H, and the bolt and thumb-screw J, constructed in the manner and for the purposes herein described and set forth.
