L. HER MANCE, OF HUDSON, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 69,914, dated October 15, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
@122 firlgrtide tefrtttb in in this: Enters patent zmh making part of tip same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, L. HERMANGE, of Hudson, in the county of Columbia, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to "the accompanying, drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. V
In the annexed drawings making part of this specification A represents a gate, which is constructed in its general features in any of the known and usual ways. Upon the side of the top slat of the gate is secured one additional slat, B, and between the two slats is formed a groove, in which a wheel, G, runs, as will be described.
0 represents the front post, which is double, and allows the front part of the gate topass between its parts, and
D represents the rear post. E represents a metallic box, which has two arms, which embrace the rear post, and by and through whichit is secured to the said post; This box E is provided with an annular opening through it, and about half 'way of this opening is an annular flange. Upon this flange a disk, F, is placed, lying upon it in a horizontal position. A slotis cut through this disk, and upon its upper face, upon each side of this slot, are formed two journal bearings. G represents a. wheel, which is placedin the slot in disk F, with its journals 7 :z: :a lying in the hearings in the said disk, The wheel G has its upper edge to run in the groove formed between the slat B and the upper slat of the gate, the weight of the rear portion, when it is shut, resting upon the wheel G. When the gate is moved backward the wheelG runs in its groove until the box E strikes the centre support or brace K, when thegate, being nearly or quite balanced upon the wheel, is swung around the disk F, turning in its bed in the boxE toallowofi the change. H represents a metallic plate, with an arm which projec ts out from it, and is turned down at its end over one of the gate-slats. This plate is secured to the rear post near the bottom of the gate, and prevents the lower side of the gate from swinging out of position both while shut and open, or while opening. A metallic loop is secured between the two front posts, which catches either upon the upper slat of the gate in a notch, d, or in the notches e e of the front bar of the gate, either to keep it from being raised or to support it, as may be required, said loop turning up or down at will for this purpose.
What I claim as new, is-
1. The box E, with its disk F and wheel G, constructed and used with the gate, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The metallic loop a, used with the gate for keeping its forward end down or supporting, substantially as herein represented.
3. I claim the metallic plate H, with its arm, when connected to the lower. side of the gate-post to prevent the gate from swinging out of position, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of May, 1867.
L. HERMAN OE.
