WM. MAGUIRE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BLIND AND SHUTTER MOVER AND FASTENER.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Var. MAGUIRE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vindow-Blind Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which draw- 1ngs Figure 1 represents the apparatus in operation, the blind being partially thrown openFig. 2 is a sectional view of the arm with a spring catch thereinF'ig. 3 represents the bottom surface of the gravitating catch with the spring thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the usual window blind opener and fastener where a cog wheel on the hinge is operated by a similar wheel on a shaft passing through the window frame to the inside of the house, so that by means of a finger on the last mentioned wheels a. gravitating catch, placed at a proper position on the outer face of the blind for resisting the wind or other agency can be positively fastened and unfastened, the finger being operated by the handle that turns the shaft inside the house, the handle and a spring catch inserted therein comprising at the same time within themselves and in connection with a curved rack, a strong yet neat mode of fixing the position of the blind when the gravitating catch is not called into play, the end of the handle being made to clasp the edge of the rack forward into one or other of the notches on the face of the curved rack.
(a) represents the wall of the house(b) the inside facing of the window frame(c) the notched and curved rack(cZ) the handle(e) the spring( the catch attached to and operated by the spring, both being in the body of the handle ((Z)(g) the shaft passing through the window facing and wall(h) the wheel on the outer end of the shaft(i) the rectangular finger projecting from the face of the wheel (h) at a distance from its center suitable to bring the finger into operative action on the gravitating catch (7') which is hinged upon its shank (7c)The Wheel must be set with regard to the wheel (Z) forming part of the hinge (m) so that the finger shall strike the catch at the proper time for positively pressing it down over the hook (at) as the mortise (0) arrives over it; and also hold the catch (7') there, the finger (i) being made to lie in the recess (p)The rack (0) and the handle (cZ) must also be set with due regard to these points.
By carrying the handle ((Z) a little beyond the point necessary to press the gravitating catch on the hook (n), (and the spring (p) in the bottom of the recess affords the means of so doing) the finger is made to glide down the recess (79) and past the spring (p) of the catch (j) nearest the finger when the parts are thus situated-The finger thus gets below the catch and when it is desired to close the blind (r) it is only necessary to reverse the motion of the handle ((Z) and effectthe disconnection of the gravitating catch from the hook by thus bringing the finger up against the bottom of the spring (79) and throw the catch off the hook; the motion of the wheels (Z) and (lb) efiecting by their motion the closure of the blind and the spring catch holding them fast.
Great neatness lightness and strength is effected by the handle (cZ) clasping the periphery of the rack (a) while the fastening is effected by the spring catch (f) in the body of the handle being thrown by the spring into the notch on the rack.
Having thus fully clearly and exactly described the nature and operation of my invention in window blind fasteners what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the finger (z') and wheels (h) and (Z) with the gravitating catch (j), its recess (p) and spring 0) and 'hook for moving, fastening and unfastening the blind.
WILLIAM MAGUIRE.
