Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. Bnscnn MEYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented anew and Improved Combined Awning Frame and Hood, of which the following is a full,

A further object is to combine with the upper portion of the awning-frame an overhanging hood for the protection of an opening at the top of the awning that affords means for escape of heat and provides ventilation.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described, and defined in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of I the .improved awning frame and hood applied to a window-casement. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of a novel supporting device employed, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the device in folded adjustment.

The improved awning-frame com prises the following details: Two similar side bars 3 of suitable length and formed of available material, which may be wood or metal, have like bends a 1) formed thereon at and near a crossbar 4, which may be integral with the side bars. Upon the side bars 3 3 are mounted two similar brackets 5, each bracket having two divergent arms 01 and a hub from which the arms extend oppositely in the same plane,

a set=screwe penetrating each hub, so as to bear upon a respective side bar when the brackets-are slid upon the side bars 3 and 10- cated near the cross-bar 4:, thereby holding said brackets secure, as indicated in Fig. 1.

Upon the side bars 3 are mounted two like sleeves 6, from each of which laterally pro jects a knob 6, having a neck 6", as shown in Fig. 2.

Two sleeves 7 are mounted and slidably held upon the side bars 3 a proper distance below the projecting knobs 6, and upon said sleeves 7 the ends of the substantially U- shaped frame-bar 8 are hinged, as indicated at g in Fig. 1, said frame-bar 8 being'adapted to support a suitably-shaped awning fabric 9, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. awning 9 extends around the U shaped frame 8 and is provided with a casing f,,adapted to receive the frame 8 and permit a portion 9 of the awning to hang pendent as a curtain when the awning is in service, and upon the lateral wind-currents.

A flexible connection-8 is secured by one end upon the frame-bar 8, as indicated in Fig. 1, and thence trends upward and toward the cross-bar 4 for engagement with a loose pulley 8 thereon, and from said pulley the flexible connection dependsa suitable length, and said portion may be drawn upon and secured to one of the side bars 3 when the awning is to be folded upward, as shown in Fig. 3.

Upon the sides A of the window-casement flat keeper-plates 10 are secured at opposite points. In each keeper-plate 10 a keyholeslot his formed, as represented clearly in Fig. 2, said plates being provided for the retention and support of the knobs 6, that may enter the enlargement at the upper ends of the slots and slide down in recesses behind the slots, so that the necks 6 engage the slots and the knobs are held removably secured behind the keeper-plates, as indicated in Fig. 1. said hood, in plate form, being constructed of wood or metal, as may be preferred.

It will be seen that the bends ab on the upper portion of each side bar 3 project the cross-bar 4 outwardly a proper degree from the cap-piece A of the window-casement, thus providing between the window-casement and the upper edge of the awning material held on the cross-bar 4 an opening B at each end of the hood for free escape of hot air at the top of the awning and for ventilation, said space between the cross-bar 4 and the window-casement also providing space for the folded awning material when the frame-bar S is rocked upward, so as to remove the awning from and prevent shading of the window.

In arranging the device for service the side bars 3 are so relatively positioned on the window-casement as to dispose the hood 12 a proper distance above the cap-piece A,which will permit the main portion of the awning material to be folded above the easement and beneath the hood to freely admit air and light when the awning is folded, as indicated in Fig. 3. I

As the hood 12 is attached upon the arms (1 of the brackets (i and these are secured upon the upper portions of the side bars 3, that are removable from the sides A of the window casement, it will be seen that the awning frame and hood may be readily removed together from a window or replaced at will in a few moments, so that the device is available for service at any time and when in position is strong, easily adjusted, and adapted to shade a window and permit escape of-hot air from beneath the awning, as before explained.

Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a removable awning-frame, of brackets removably secured on the frame, and a hood mounted on the brackets.

2. The combination with a removable awning-frame, comprising two-side bars joined by a top cross-bar, of brackets removably secured on the side bars of the frame, and a hood mounted on the brackets.

3. In an awning-frame, the combination with the side bars of'the frame that are joined together by a top cross-bar, of means for removably securing said side bars upon a window-casement, comprising a slidable sleeve mounted upon each side bar, a knob projected from the sideof each sleeve by an intervening neck, a keeper-plate for each knob secu red on the sides of the window-casement, and having a keyhole-slot therein into which the knobs may enter and engage their spacing-necks with edges of the slots, thusadapting the knobs to detachably secure the side bars of the frame on the easement and a clamping device for the lower portion of each side bar.

4. An awning-frame, comprising side bars bent outward and upward at their upper ends, a cross-bar integral with said ends, a sleeve on each side bar having a knob thereon spaced from the sleeve by a neck, a keeper-plate for each knob, having a keyhole slot therein which may be engaged by the knob and neck, a substantially U-shaped frame-bar hinged on sleeves mounted to slide on the side bars, and a bracket-block for each side bar, having a perforated boss, said bosses receiving the side bars, and a set-screw for each boss, adapted to secure a side bar therein.

5. In a device of the character described, the frame having side bars joined by a spacing cross-bar, brackets mounted on the side bars near the cross-bar, and a plate-like hood secured by its ends on the brackets and ex tended above the cross-bar.
