NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMORY A. TRUSSELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE SIEBER da TRUSSELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A
CORPORATION.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 'Patent No. 697,571, dated April 15, 1902.
Application filed January 14, 1901. Serial No. 43,149. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EMORY A. TRUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of temporary binders designed for use in holding loose sheets of paper; and the invention has for its object the production of a binder of the type named embodying a maximum of strength and rigidity and of simple and inexpensive construction.
My invention consists in featu res of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view of my binder in open position. Fig. II is an enlarged sectional view of the binder closed. Fig. III is an enlarged detail perspective view of one end of the sheet-holding frame. Fig. IV is an end view showing the sheet-holding frame in the position assumed when loose sheets are inserted or removed.
l designates the cover-boards,-of strawboard or other suitable material. The cover-boards are inclosed by outer facings 2 and inner facings 3, as seen in FigfII. The facings 2 and 3 extend across the space between the rear edges of the binder to-form members of the binder-back, and between them is located a stiener-l, that extends longitudinally of the binder to provide the necessary rigidity in the back of the binder.
5 designates a liexible reinforcing-stay, the central part of which is interposed between the outer facing 2 and the stiftener 4 to form a member of the binder-back and the ends 5iL of which are inserted into the cover-boards l and glued therein, so that said reinforcingstay serves to strengthen the connection between the binder-back and the covers.
6 designates the bars of a sheet-holding frame, said bars being provided with iianges 7 and hinged together by arms 8, carried thereby.
9 designates curved prongs, each permanently lixed at one end to the flange of one of the frame-bars 6, and 10 are curved prongs, each fixed at one end to the flange of the other bar 6. These prongs 9 and l0 are adapted to receive the paper sheets A, previously perforated, placed thereon between the covers of the binder, the sheets being retained upon either of the prongs and being so correspondiuglyperforated that they may be transferred from side to side when the binder is open, as shown in Fig. I.
Each of the ianges 7 of the bars 6 is provided with apertures 7, adapted to receive the points of the prongs 9 and lO when the binder is in closed condition. By having the points of the prongs enter the apertures 7a, as stated, the prongs thereby connect the bars 6 when the binder isV closed and serve as braces to prevent strain uponthe sheet-holding frame.
The frame by which the loose sheets are held-'L'. e., the bars 6 and connecting-arms 8- is -joined to the back of the binder in the following manner:
l1 designates clamping -strips that lie against the iiexible reinforcing-stay 5, in positions opposite the frame-bars 6, and are connected to said bars by screws 12 and clamp the inner cover-board facing 3 and flexible stay 5, thereby securely holding the sheetholding frame to the back of the binder.
-I claim as my inventionl. In a temporary binder, the combination of a pair of cover-boards, facings applied to the cover-boards and extending across the back of the binder and serving as back members, a flexible reinforcing-stay interposed between said facings at the binder-back and having its ends inserted within said coverboards and attached to said boards independently of said facings, and sheet-holding means attached to the binder-back, substantially as described.
2. In a temporary binder, the combination of a pair of cover-boards, facings applied to said cover-boards and extending across the back of the binder andserving as back members, a flexible reinforcing-stay interposed between said facings at the binder-back and having its ends inserted within said coverboards and attached to said boards independ- IOO entiy of said facings, and e stiffening member composed of two bars hinged together, sheetloeated between one of said facings and said holding prongs carried by said frame, clampflexible reinforcing-stay, substantially as deing-strips arranged against said stay, and
scribed. means for connecting said frame and said 15 5 3. In :L temporary binder, the combination clamping-strips to clamp said stay and said of cover-boards, inner and outer facings apinner facings, substantially as described.
plied to said boards, said facings connecting T said boards at their rear edges and serving as EMORY A' TRL SSELL' members of the back of the binder, a. stayin- In presence ofro terposed between seid facings and having its E. S. KNIGHT,
ends secured to said cover-boards, :L frame M. P. SMITH.
