Be it known that I, JOHN DONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pen Argyle, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania,have invented a new and useful Feed-Screw Adjustment, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates generally to feedscrews, and more particularly to an improved adjusting means whereby the wear of the said screw is taken up; and the Object of the invention. is to provide an exceedingly cheap and nection with a feed-screw used in connection with any machine or drill.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional view of the feed-screw adjustment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the feed-nut, and Fig. 2 a top plan view of the jam-nut. Fig. 8 is a side elevation oi the adjusting-nut, and Fig. 3 isa top plan view ofthe same, and Fig. i is a top plan view of the intermediate or jam nut.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the stance is shown as forming a part of a drill. This feed-screw passes through a feed-nut B,- which rests within a collar or sleeve C,said nut extending a considerable distance above the said collar or sleeve, and said extending portion is externally threaded, as shown at B. A jam-nut D is screwed upon the threaded portion of the feed-nut and bears against the upperend of the collar or sleeve 0, and an adj usting-nut E is arranged upon the feed screw above the upper end of the feed-nut, said ad justin g-n ut being recessed at its lower end, as shown at E, in order to receive the upper end of the said feed-nut, said recessed portion of the adj usting-nut being threaded E and E respectively, the threaded portion B of thefeed-nut engagingthe interior threads E while an intermediate jam-nut or threaded portion E,said intermediate jam-nut or collar. The adjusting-nut E is for the purpose of taking up the wear of the such wear the nut F is loosened and the ad justing-nut E turned the necessar" amount to take up the said wear, and -the nut F is then retightened and all the parts will be held in their proper relative positions, and an accurate feed of the screw can then be had. Inasmuch as the parts when so locked virtually constitute one complete nut, by means 01": the adjustment herein shown and described I am enabled to quickly and easily adjust the parts with great accuracy, so that any amount of wear can be taken-up, and by means of such device I am enabled to use a screw for a greater length of time than ordinarily, inasmuch as by taking up the wear the use of said screw can be continued until the threads of the screw are completely worn out.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf 1. The combination of a feed-n ut, the no per end of which is externally threaded, an adjusting-nut arranged above the ieed-nut-and, adjustable thereon, and means for locking the adjusting-nut, as set forth.
2. The combination of a feed-nut, the upper end of which is threaded externally, an adj usting-nut arranged upon the threaded end of said feed-nut, and the locking-nut for securely locking the adjusting-nut in position, as set forth.
3. The combination with the feed nut 'th readed at its upper end, of the adj usting-nut arranged upon the threaded end of the feed nut and below the adj usting-nut,and the locking-nut arranged upon the adj usting-nut and adapted to bear upon the jam-nut, substan tially as set forth. 4. The combination of a feed-nut, the upper portion of which is externally threaded, an adj usting-nut, the lower end. of which is recessed, said recessed portion being internally and externally threaded, the upper end of the feed-nut engaging the interior threads, a jam-nutarranged upon the threaded portion of the feed-nut and below the adj usting-nut, an d a lockin g-nut screwed upon the adj ustin gnut and bearing upon the jam-nut, substantially as set forth. v
