TINTTEE STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ROY E. SMITH, OF PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF TTVO-THIRDS TO LUNDY B. SMITH AND OARYLL T. SMITH, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
INSTRUMENT FOR COOLING OR FOR WARMING INTERNAL PORTIONS OF THE HUMAN BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,181, dated April 8, 1902.
Application filed August 20. 1901. Serial No. 72,705. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instruments for Cooling or for Warming Internal Portions of the Human Body, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The objects of this improvement are to provide a simple and inexpensive instrument of suitable length and diameter to enter the canal of the patient and carry the operating head of the instrument to the parts to be treated, while the other parts will be guarded against the effects of heat or cold by internal insulating material surrounding the heat or cold carrying pipes, the latter being retained centrally of the instrument by skeleton braces within portions of said instrument, the thermal portion thereof being of smaller diameter than the insulated portion. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the instrument constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 00 00 of Fig. 2.
In said drawings, shown on an enlarged scale, A designates the tubular body of the instrument, which is preferably made of metal and of suitable length. Said body is conical at its front end B and is curved to one side at O in the rear of its conical end B.
Centrally within the tube A there is a tube D of about half the diameter of the tube A and projecting through its conical front end and through its bottom. The front end of the tube D is semispherical and closed. The rear end is also closed and carries a tubular stopper E, which can be inserted into the mouth of a bottle or into a rubber tube intended to contain water at the desired temperature.
From the side of the tube D, below the lower end of the tube A, projects laterally a tube d to conduct the water away from the tube D.
Said tube 61- has also around its free end a stopper-sleeve e to be inserted into one end of a rubber tube to conduct the water into a basin or other receptacle on a lower level.
Centrally within the tube D there is a tube F,open at both ends, to carry water within the instrument. The diameter of the tube F is only about one-half that of the tube D, so that there is an annular passage around said tube F for the return of water admitted through the tube F. The open front end of said tube F terminates at a distance of and in the rear of the closed semispherical end of the tube D. The front end of the conical portion 13 of the tube A is soldered to the body of the tube D, so as to form a closed and a smooth junction of said tubes at that point.
To prevent the whole length of the exterior tube A from becoming sensibly heated or reduced in temperature, as the case may be, by the current of Water passing through the tubes F and D, the space between the tubes A and D is filled with cementG from one end to the other, and to insure a uniform thickness of cement around the tube D, particularly at the bend O, a spider-frame consisting of a collar H, encircling the tube D, and radial braces 72., hearing against the interior of the tube A, is placed within said tube A, the spaces between the braces h permitting the cement to pass alongside of the collar H to the extremity of the tube A, protecting it the whole length. The rear end of the tube A is closed with a disk g, which protects the body of the cement G at that point.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. An instrument of the character described, consisting of a tube D having its front end closed and its rear end provided with a lateral branch, a tube F concentrically within the tube D, a tube A concentric with the tubes D and F and having its front end conical and adapted to embrace the front portion of the tube D, and cement filling the interior of the tube A the whole length thereof, substantially as described.
2. An instrument of the character described consisting of a tube D having its front end closedand its rear end provided with a terior of the tube A, the Whole length therelateral'branch, a tube F concentrically within the tube D, a tube A concentric with the tubes D and F and having its front end conical and adapted to embrace the front portion of the tube D, the three tubes being bent to one side and having a spider-brace Within said bent portion, and cement filling the inof, substantially as described. 10
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ROY E. SMITH. Witnesses:
ROBT. M. GALLoWAY, J. B. RYAN.
