Description

w. n. LUDLOW.
l nstruments for the Cure of Diseases of the Rectum, N0.149,872. PatentedApril21,1874.
7677255 565. jrzwzziaz' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. LUDLOW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN INSTRUMENTS FOR THE CURE 0F DISEASES OF THE RECTUM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,872, dated April 21, 1874; application filed December 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM D. LUDLOW, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful'Instrument for the Cure of Rectal Diseases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in a shell or tube, A, closed at its extremity a, for introduction into the rectum, so constructed at its neck B as to I be easily connected with a syringe or other forcing apparatus.
The said tube A is preferably made of metal, on account of its superior conducting properties. It is sufliciently small at its extremity a to be readily introduced into the rectum, and expands at its base cc, so that when inserted it is brought directly in contact with the parts exterior to the anal aperture, which are-frequently the seat of burning or painful sensations, and which require the cooling and soothing application of the tube as much as the parts within the rectum. D is a metallic pipe communicating with the interior of the tube A, and maybe made so as to be easily coupled to a rubber tube, for the escape of fluid which has been forced into tube A through aperture 13, and which it is desirable to convey away from the-bed, in order to avoid wetting the bedclothes. A small hole may occupy the same position as the pipe D, or the tube A may be open at the base to discharge the water when it is rapidly supplied, as it may be, directly from ,a hydrant.
I am aware that cones filled with ice have been employed for introduction into the rec tum, and that tubes substantially like mine in shape, but unlike mine in being open at both ends, have been used in vaginal and uterine diseases, and that receptacles different in shape from mine, and made of rubber, have been employed for cooling various parts of the body, as the brain, the spine, and the vagina, said devices having no other apertures but those for ingress and egress of water. I therefore limit myself strictly to details of the instrument described by me for use in rectal diseases.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic tube, A, for use in rectal diseases, closed at one end, a, flaring at the other end at c, and provided with two apertures, to which pipes B and D lead, and which serve for i11- gress and egress of fluid, substantially as set forth.
'WM. D. 'LUDLOW.
