FURNACE OF STEAM-BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,840, dated April 1, 1902. Application filed August 19, 1901. Serial No. 72,546. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ADOLPH PEABODY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at the the furnaces of steam-boilers, the object being to insure the consumption of smoke and to economize fuel.
According to this invention we form an airspace at the lower part of the furnace by means of a metal plate, which we term the channel-plate, fixed at a suitable height above the bottom of the flue by means of side pieces. This allows air to pass upward to the combustion-chamber, in which latter we place blocks of asbestos supported on hinged perforated plates placed immediately-behind the furnace-bridge. We may employ asbestos alone, or in some cases we may prefer to mix fire-clay with the asbestos, or other substances having the property of absorbing and radiating a large amount of heat may be employed. A steam jet ornozzle, or a set of such jets or nozzles, is led into the air-chamber and comes beneath the plates which carry the blocks of asbestos. The purpose of this jet or set of jets is to clear away anydust from the top of the asbestos. It has been found in practice that Without the use of a cleansing spray or jet to clear the dust from the top of the asbestos blocks the said blocks rapidly clog and defeat the object of the invention. Another steam jet or jets is or are attached to the front end of the channel-plate in order to create an increased draft through the air-space.
We prefer to make the bridges of the furnace of iron.
In order that our said invention may be better understood, we will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings accompanying this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of a Cornish boiler, the furnace of which is fitted with ourimprovements. Fig. 2 shows an end view of same. Fig. 3shows the manner in which the plates which carry the asbestos blocks are hinged.

By hinging the plates (1, as shown, such plates may be raised to give ready access to the bottom of the furnace-flue for the purpose of cleaning.
In the case of other than Lancashire, Galloway, and Cornish boilers the position of the secondary grate is changed to suit circumstances. For example, in the case of a tubular boiler we can place our secondary grate above the tubes and admit the air either through the side or from the top of the boiler-setting.
The jets and steam-spray are arranged in a similar manner to that described for a Cornish boiler.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. In a steam-boiler furnace, the combina tion of a main firegrate, and a secondary jets g and h.
