Description
@gleiten tutrs gutent @fitte PARKER BURNHAM, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Paten-t No. 69,625, dated October, 1867.
IMPROVED HAWSE PIPE.
@tige tlgttnle ment tu in ligase 'rttnffs zitcut 2mb mating part nf the time.
Be it known that I, PARKER BURNIIAM, of Gloucester, in the county of Essex, and Stute of Massachusetts, have invented n. new and useful improvement in Huwse Pipes, of which the following is :t full, clear, `and exact description, reference beingI hml to the accompanying drawings, making a. part of-this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents n front view of' my improvement.
Figure 2 is n longitudinal vertical-section, and
Figure 3 is a. top View. -v
The object of my invention is to arrange a, hnwse pipe within the vessels side, so that it shall be self-adjusting to the movement of the cable, es the letter passes through the said pipe; and the invention consists in so constructing the hawse pipe, end arranging it within the bows or other part of the vessel, as to enable it to haven. rocking motion in lthe direction of its length, und accommodate itselt` t'o the motion of' the cable, admitting of aehange of inclination nt either end, in order to adapt the snitl lmwse pipe to the varying inolinution of thecable.
Rof'erringgjo the' drawings, A rcpresentszt portion ofthe side of n, vessel, in which the hnwse pipe is usually fixed, und D is nnopening in the sume. -B is 'thehewse pipe, represented as of circular form :1t one end, and eut away on its upper side u greater portion of its length, as shown in fig. 2. On the under side of the central portion of the hnwsc pipe is :t projection, b, fitting within n corresponding recess, a, in the portion A of the vessel. Through this projection I) passes a. pin, c, by which it is secured in position. The inner and outer ends of the opening D are cut uu'ny, so us tozrllow the hnwse pipo u rocking motion in the direction of its length.
In this mannerthe huwsc pipe will mlupt itself to the varying' lines of inclination of the cable, caused by the motionof the vessel or otherwise, preventing it from wearing or chufing as it is being pztid out or hove in" during the operation of, weighing or of letting go the anchor.
What I claim as my inventiop, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ailjustuble lmwse pipe B, arranged within the bow orsiile ofthe vessel, when constructed and operating substantially ns :mtl for the purpose set fort-h.
In testii'nony whereof I have signed my nume to this specification in the presence of two subscribingwitnessc-s.
PARKER B'URNH-AM.
