Be it known that I, JOSEPH ONESIME DAU- PHIN, a subject of the Queen of Great Brite ain, and a resident of. Rat Portage, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Rod-Swab, of'which the following is a full, clear, and ex act description.

The purpose of this'invention is to provide a device for effectively wiping rods which move through stufiing-boXes-for example, piston or valve rods; and to thisY end the invention comprises a peculiarly-constructed case arranged to be attached tothe stuffingbox bolts, so as to be held in immediate proximity to the stuffing-box.

This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof. A

Figure 1 is a perspective viewrillustrating the use of my invention. Fig. ,2 is a sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2,`and Fig. 4 is an edge elevation thereof looking from the right hand of Fig. 1.

In Fig. lthe stuffing-box is represented by the numeral 5, and 6 is the gland, which is held in place by the usual bolts 7. S indicates the rod which passes through the stuffing-box, as usual.

My improvement comprises a circular case which is formed in two parts 9 and 10, the part 10 being the upper part and being hingedly connected with the lower part.9at the point 11, the opposite end of the section 10 of the case being providedwithV a tongue 12, .which ts into a corresponding recess in the adjacent end of the part 9. The sections 9 and 1Q ofthe circular box are provided with Serial No. 19,898. (No model.)

lugs 14, which are orificed to receive the bolts v7, and by the application of nuts to the bolts,

as shown in Fig. 1, the two sections of the box are held securely and rigidly iu place. The boxencircles the rod 8 and carries therein an annular swab 15, which is preferablyr formed of felt and arranged with its inner edge in contact with the rod, so as to wipe or swab the same as the rod reciprocates. The swab 15 is held properly in engagement with the rod by a spring 16, yone end of which is fastened to a pin 17, fitted in a hollow pretuberance 18 on the section 10 of the swab-box. The spring 16 passes around the outer edge of the swab and back to and beyond the pin 17, and by properly tensioning the spring it is made to press the swab against the rod. The hollow protuberance 18 serves, further, as an oil-cup, into which oil maybe poured to keep the swab 15 saturated, and this serves, therefore, not only to clear the rod of matter attached thereto, but, further, to supply it with lubricant as it enters the stuffing-box 5.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--Y Y A rod-swab, comprising a circular case or box formed of two sections hinged together and adapted to contain a swab, each section being provided with an apertured lug, and one of the sections with a hollow protuberance, and a circular spring having one end secured in the protuberauce and its free end extending under its fixed end,y substantially as described.
