Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICEa JOHN F. SEIBERLING, OF AKRON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT 'IN JOURNAL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,049, dated October 19, 1875; application led Apri114, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concern:v
Be it known that I, JOHN F. SEIBERLING, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Journal- Box, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of my improved journal-box. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
My invention consists of a certain new combination, which will be fully described in the following specification:
My journal-box is made with a strong castiron frame, A, provided with a set-screw, E, for holding a split sleeve or thimble, O, which has a slit through its whole length, as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 2. A plate, D, extends the whole length of the frame A and thimble C. The screw E presses upon this plate, and thus, by turning the screw, the thimble may be pressed together or made smaller in diameter, so as always to fit the journal. This plate also prevents the wear of the screw upon the split sleeve or thimble O, which is very iinportant in harvesters. The sleeve O and the plate D are placed in the frame A, and the screw E properly tightened to make the sleeve lit the journal, and the space between the frame and sleeve is filled with fusible metal, (seen at B,) thus holding all the parts firmly in place; and whenever the wear renders it necessary to again tighten the sleeve by turning the screw E, it will be best to again close up the space by fusible metal, and thus prevent any motion of the parts from the jar of Working the machine.
By the above construction the castings require very little expense of litting up, and therefore the journal-box is both cheap and durable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim J The combination of the split sleeve or thimble O, the frame A, the plate D, screw E, and fusible-metal filling B, substantially as se forth.
JOHN F. SEIBERLIN G.
