UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. LAVENE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN B. TOUGAS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
PlTMAN-ROD ooNNEoTloN.
Specification of Letters Patent...
Patented Aug. 1, 1905.
Application filed March 24,1904. Serial No. 199,714.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. LAVENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonpart of the same, in which Figure l is a side view of a pitman-rod connection embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detached central sectional view of the journal-box; and Fig. 4is anelevation of the journal-box, showing one'of the annular bearings by which it is swiveled to the straps of the pitmaln-rod.
Similar reference-letters refer to similar parts in the dilferent views.
Fig. 1 represents a side view of one end of a pitman-rod of a harvesting-machine to which myinvention is specially adapted, and it comprises a bar A, preferably of wood, and straps B B, attached thereto by bolts B, said straps projecting beyond the end A of the bar A, with the projecting ends adapted to be clamped together by clamping-bolts O and nuts C, so as to pinch the journal-box D. The
box D consists of a cast-metal block provided with an antifriction-lining D. The box D is provided on diametrically opposite sides with annular bearing-ribs D D each concentric with a common axis (indicated by thev broken line E, Fig. 3) and at right angles to the axis of the journal-box. The annular bearing-ribs D D are provided with beveled or V-shapd surfaces F F, which are inserted in annular V-shaped grooves G in the straps B B, so that the box D is capable of aslight rocking motion about the axis E, Fig. 3, the annular ribs D D turning in the V-shaped grooves G, forming a swiveled bearing for the journalbox D, which may be accurately adjusted as wear takes place by tightening the clampingnutsO O and bringing the ends of'the straps B B closer together.- An'opening H is formed through one of the straps B in alinement with an oil-hole I in the box D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
to the pitman-rod having annular V-shapedgrooves on the inner side of said straps, there being annular beveled bearings on said box fitting said grooves.-
2. In a pitman, the combination with a pair of clamping-straps provided with annular V- shap'ed grooves, of a journal-box provided with beveled annular ribs on opposite sides of said box and concentric with an axis at right angles to the axis of said box, and adapted to enter said V-shaped grooves, and means for clamping said straps against said box.
3. In a pitman, the combination ofa journalbox having annular ribs on opposite sides of said box with their axes at right angles to the axis of said box, and a pair of straps attached to the pitman-rod provided with annular grooves adapted to receive said ribs.
Dated this 22d day of March, 1904:.
' JOHN B. LAVENE.
