IMPROVEMENT lN PITMEN FQR HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 123,283, dated January 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB M. MOURER, of Millheim, in the county of Uentre and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Iitman for Harvesters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improv d pitman applied to a sickle, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawing denote the same parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the means for connecting the driving mechanism with the sickle of a harvester, for the purpose ot compensating for the wear of parts at the heel of the sickle and at the crank which receives the pitman; and, further, to render the whole connection more secure than that'now in use. To this end the invention consists in the construction of the pitman an din the means by which it is connected to the sickle and the crank of the driving mechanism as I will now proceed to describe.
In the accompanyingdrawin g, Ais the sickle of a harvester, and B is a pitman by which it is connected to the crank of the driving mechanism. or has formed upon its upper face a lug or projection, (3, which is embraced by a stirrup or shear, I), as shown in Fig.1, said shear being held upon the lug by the bolt E passing transversely through both. The closed end of the shear is provided with a set-screw, F, bearing against the outer face of the lug and its arms are pivoted to the pitman B beyond the opposite face of the lug in such a manner that the end of the pitman shall enter a recess, 9, formed in the lugs, as shownin Fig. 2. By tightening the nut on the bolt E the shear is held securely upon the projection O, and is prevented from turning upon said bolt by the end of the pitman entering the recess g. When the parts become worn by frequent use they are tight ened by adjusting the set-screw F. The wear of parts is thus compensated for, and the daugcr of breaking due to loose connections com- The heel of the sickle is provided with pletely avoided. The end of the pitman opposite to the sickle is formed with two arms, H, to receive the divided box I, which embraces the crank of the driving mechanism. Over the ends of the arms is fitted a block, J, which bears against the outer end of the box, and between the two parts of the latter are inserted Indiarubber or other elastic packing-strips K. The block J is held in place to secure the box within the arms of the pitman by means of a key, L, whose ends project through the arms upon the outside of the block, as shown in Fig. 2. M is a set-screw passing through the center of the key and also through the block, so that its point shall bear against the box. This screw serves two purposes, to wit: first, to hold the key in place; and secondly, to adjust the boxes upon the crank to compensate for wear. The elastic packing serves to prevent the rattling of th boxes, and to hold them upon the crank with a yielding pressure.
By my invention a simple and economical connection is formed for the sickle and crankshaft, which not only prevents the liability of breaking, but fully compensates for the wear of parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The adjustable shear 1), in combination with the pitman B and heel of the sickle, substantially as described, for the purpose specitied.
The adjustable shear D, held upon the heel of the sickle by means of the bolt E, the end of the pitman, and the recess 9, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with the pitmanarms H and the divided box I, I claim the block K, key L, and set-screw M, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
4. In combination with the pitman B and the heel of the sickle, I claim the adjustable shear D and the yielding adjustable box I, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
JACOB M. MO URER.
