SLIDE BOX.
Patented Feb. 23, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL M. BLEVENS, or ELLErTsvILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF TO THOMAS H. ODONNELL, OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA.
SLIDE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,412, dated February 23, 1897.
Application filed April 1, 1896. Serial No. 585,816. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. BLEVENS, of Ellettsville, in the county of Monroe, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slide-- Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my slidebox as applied to a lever; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the same, and Fig. 3 a similar view of the slide-box heretofore used.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and durable means of attaching gibs orjwearing-surfaces to the slide-boxes of levers, pitmen, 8m. and to this end said invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
Heretofore the gibs or wear-plates of slideboxes constituting the connection between crank wheels and levers have been construct- -ed, as shown in Fig. 3, with an outturned flange or lip at each end to-overlap the end of the slide-box. When either of said flanges or lips is broken off, the gib is rendered useless, and such breakage is a common occurrence, as this construction of gib requires the use of brass or similar metal. Added to the loss of the gib is the expense and loss of time and use of the machine which is involved in replacing the broken gib with another. To avoid the cause of this loss and yet provide an efficient and cheap constructionhas been the especial purpose I have had in view in making my invention.
In the drawings, A designates a slide-box of usual construction, which is provided with form of a plate, of wood, brass, or other material, havingalength somewhat shorter than the length of the opening a, so that a space will be left between each end of the same and each end of the opening. Projecting into the latter at each end and engaging the end of the wear-piece is a flange or rib d of a strong metal plate or strap D, that is fitted over and conforms to the exterior of the box A, being held in place thereon by the projection of its ribs d and d into the box-opening a. Confined thus between the flanges, the wear-plate cannot possibly get out of place, and wear can easilybe compensated for by placing a backing of sheet-iron between the plate and the wall of the opening a; and it will be seen that by breaking ofi the second lip or flange of the old form of gib,-when one rib has already been broken, I can utilize the otherwise worthless gib with my holding devices or straps D and D. The straps D and D are placed on the box in any suitable way, as by heating them and bending them thereon. As said straps can obviously be made of stronger and tougher metal than could the old form of gib, the danger of loss by breakage is reduced to a minimum. 4
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination of a slide, a lever or part upon which the same moves, a wearplate between the slide and lever, anda strap fitting over the exterior of the slide and having portions that project in line with said wear-plate at opposite ends, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a slide-box having a lever-receiving opening, a strap fitting over the exterior of the box, and having a rib projecting into each end of said opening, alever and a wear-plate placed between the two ribs of the strap, substantially as and forthe purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of February, A. D. 1896.
SAMUEL M. BLEVENS.
