UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EBENEZER B. COLBY, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PISTON-PACKINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 213,739., dated April 1, 1879; application filed August 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER B. COLBY, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Packin gs; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in piston-packings for piston-rods on steam or other engines; and consists of the combination, with the ordinary stuffing-box and its gland, of a cylindrical piece of wood well saturated with oil or similar lubricating material, which wood is made conical or tapering in one or both ends, and resting in tapering metallic cups, between which and the bottom of the stufiing-box or lower part of the gland, or both, is located one or two yielding beds or supports, so as to keep the said wood packing, as well as one or both of the said metallic receivingcups, in their proper relative positions to that of the piston -rod.
By this arrangement and combination the tapering wood packing can be inserted and used in any of the ordinary stuffin g boxes without making any changes in their construction, as all that is necessary is one or two cups and yielding beds in combination with the said tapering wood packing, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of a stuffing-box with my improved packing. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig.
3 represents a side view of the packing-cup; and Figs. 4 and 5 represent side views of a single and double wooden packing.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
a is an ordinary stuffing-box, with its movable gland, b, and set-screws c c, and nuts d d, as usual. e represents a piston-rod.
f represents the improved wood packingpiece, that is made as a single piece, and in the shape of a hollow cylinder, with one or two conical ends, f f, as shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5. This wood packing-piece is soaked or saturated with oil or fatty materials previous to its insertion within the stufling-box.
g 9 represent the metallic cups, into which the ends f f of the packing f are forced by the gland b. g g are ears on the cup g, by which it may be'withdrawn out from the studing-box, if desired. his the yielding bed or support for each of the cups 9 g.
I am aware that Letters Patent were granted to C. N. Petersen January 26, 1869, No. 86,316, for piston-packings, in which a wooden packing is shown; and I wish to state that I donotclaim as my invention, broadly, a wooden packing, nor anything as set forth in the abovenamed patent; but
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-
The combination, with a stuffing-box, a, and gland b, of the wooden oil-saturated packingpiecef, one or two metallic cups, g g, and yielding beds or supports 71. h, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EBENEZER B. COLBY.
Witnesses ALBAN ANDREN, BENJ. POTTER.
