J. .HORSFIELL D008 CHECK.
(Application led Apr. 10, 1961.)
(N0 Model.)
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN I'IOBSFIELD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO E. EMMA HORSFIELD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOORCHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.
693,021, dated February 1 1, 1902.
Application filed April 10, i901. Serial No. 55,131. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN I-IORSFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for preventing the opening of a door or window beyond a certain point; and its object is to furnish a device ot' this character that will be simple and cheap in construction and durable and efficient in operation and one that will stop the swing of the door gently and with little or no noise, and is more particularly designed to take the place of the chains which are now in use for this purpose. By having a device of this character on a door the door-check is prevented from becoming deranged or the hinges broken.
It consists, then, in combining with a number of telescoping sections short springs to act as buffers, in combining with the door or window and its frame a plurality of telescoping members, with suitable buffer-springs, and means for securing the members to the frame and door.
Other` details and features will be more specifically pointed out hereinafter'.
In the drawings accompanying this specification, Figure l is a sectional view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of the same when extended. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the method of connecting the check to the door.
A is a rod connected to the door B by suitable means, as by the ball-and-socket joint and bracket a., as shown. At the opposite end is a cap or flange ct. This rod is telescoped within a tube C, having a cap c, with a hole o therein which slidingly fits *the rod A. This tube is telescoped in a second tube D, passing through a cap d thereon, and is provided at the other end with a cap c2. The end of the tube D is secured to the door-frame by the bracket E, as shown. Short sections of springs f are interposed between the telescoping sections to engage the flanges or caps when the check is extended, and thereby prevent undue jar or noise when the door is swung open. Holes g are shown in the tubes to allow the free passage of air in and out; but 1n certain cases it may be desirable to leave one of the sections closed, and thereby form a yielding stop by the compression of the air in the tube.
The method of operation of the check is readily seen from Fig. 3. When the door` is closed, the rods and tubes are telescoped, and draw out to the desired limit as the door is opened.v
i Various changes in the details of construction and method of applying this invention will suggest themselves as coming within the scope thereof, and I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown; but
. What I claim, and desire to secure by Let# ters Patent, is
1. The combination with a door or equivalent device, of a rod hinged thereto, having its free end flanged or capped, a tube having an apertured cap in which the stem of said rod plays, and anged or capped at its opposite end, a second tube having an apertured cap embracing the cylindrical portion of the lastmentioned tube, and being hinged at its farther end to apoint of support or retention, and means to cushion the sections as the door is thrown fully open, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a door or equivalent device, of a rod hinged thereto having its free end flanged, a tube having an apertured cap in which the stein of said rod plays, and flanged atits opposite end, a second tube having an apertured cap embracing the cylindrical portion of the last-mentioned tube, and being hinged at its farther end to the doorframe or point of retention, and short sections of springs interposed between the various flanges and caps, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a door or equiva; lent device, a rod hinged thereto telescoping' with tubular telescopic members, flanges and apertured ends on said rod and tubes to prevent their being drawn ont of` engagement, the outer tube being hinged to the door-frame, holes in said tubes to allow the free p assage of air in `and out thereof, and short sections of springsinterposed between the said flanges and caps to cushion the sections as the door is swung to the limit of its throw, substantially as described.
JOHN HORSFIELD.
