CANOB' BOTTLE OPENER. (Applicatiqn flld am. 94. 1901. (No Model.)
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BYRON R. BACON, OF SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
CAN OR BOTTLE OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 692,045, dated January 28, 1902.
Application filed September 24, 1901. Serial No. 76,400. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BYRON R. BAON,a cilizen of theUnited States, residing at South Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, (Whose post-ofiice address is South Orange,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can or Bottle Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is designed to provide a canopener of the usual square-cut style,in which the blade and fulcrum are made integral with one another and also with a device for opening bottles.
The device is one of great utility and also a construction that is simple and of a slight cost of manufacture.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a top View, of my improved can and bottle opener. Figs. 3 and 4: illustrate two methods of using the uncorking device. Fig. 5 is a modification of the article.
In said views, is a plate of metal or suitable material which is provided with a blade 11. A lip 12 is bent away from the body of the plate and then across the plane of its surface and the knife to form the fulcrum 13, which may be cut away, as at 14, to straddle the out. On the other side of the fulcrum I place a hook 15 and a small tongue 16, the
per which isprovided with a staple and show the way it may be removed. The hook 15 is inserted in the staple, and the tongue l6,restvice at the end of the fulcrum 13 with a sharp edge to form a cutting or scraping blade 18, which is made concave and can be used in conjunction with the opener for removing the heavy tin-foil wrappers usual around the necks of bottles containing imported goods. The edge being concave and sharp readily fits the neck of the bottle, and by drawing it around the foil would be cleanly scraped ofi.
I may change slightly my arrangement of parts without going beyond the limits of my invention and notconfine myself to the arrangements shown.
Having thus described my invention, What Iclaim is- 1. A can and bottle opener comprising a plate provided with a blade and a hook, with a common fulcrum arranged between them, substantially as set forth.
2. A can and bottle opener comprising a plate provided with a blade and a hook, a lip bent away from and then across the plane of the plate and knife, and acting as a fulcrum to the blade and hook, substantially as set forth. 3. A can and bottle opener, comprising a plateprovided with a blade and a hook, a common fulcrum between them and a tongue below said hook substantially as set forth.
4. A can and bottle opener, comprising a plate provided with a blade and a hook, a fulcrum common to them arranged between them, the end of the fulcrum being provided with a cutting edge, substantially as set forth.
5'. A can and bottle opener, comprising a plate provided with a blade and a hook, a fulcrum common to them arranged between them, a tongue below the hook, the end of the fulcrum being provided with a cutting edge, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of September, 1901.
BYRON R. BACON.
