CARD FOR STEAM-ENGINE INDICATORS.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES B. BOSWORTH, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new 5 and useful Improvement in Cards for Steam- Engine Indicators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.

It is desirable that cards of steam-engine indicators should be provided with means whereby they may be snugly and accurately fitted to the cylinder of the indicator in the I act of applying them to the cylinder. This is desirable for the purpose of securing accurate results and also for the purpose of saving time and preventing the soilure of the card while it is being put on the cylinder.

My invention consists in providing the card with means whereby these results may be secured, and it comprises providing each card near each end with a predetermined-line for determining in advance the portion of the card which is to envelop and tightly fit the cylinder and the portions of the ends which extend from the holders or clamps by which the card is secured to the cylinder. The card so prepared is especially adapted for use in conjunction with a cylinder having the type of holders or clamps shown in the drawings and comprises two spring arms or fingers parallel with each other separated by a narrow space and which lie along the cylinder and press or clamp the ends of the card against the face of the cylinder with sufiicient friction to hold the card from moving on the cylinder while a card is being taken.

The card is made of paper or any other suitable material and is of the desired width and of a length to provide what may be called tab ends b b, which are upon each side of the part 19 which encompasses the cylinder.

This part b and the ends I) b have between them the lines b b of demarcation, which may beformed therein simply as a ruling or as a crease or groove. These lines determine the size of the cylindrical portion of thecard when applied to the cylinder and in advance of its application and also the extent of the tab ends, which extend from the cylindrical part of the card when upon the cylinder.

To apply the card, the tabs 1) b are folded upon the folding-line b b outward in the same direction and the edges of the card upon these folding-lines brought together to form a cylinder. This card cylinder is of a size to fit the cylinder of the indicator, and the tab ends 6 b are so disposed upon the fitting of the card to the cylinder to enter the space or recess a between the clamping arms or fingers of the cylinders, and they provide means when thus brought together by which the card in its cylindrical form may be drawn upon the cylinder and without requiring the application of the hand to any other part of the card, so that its soilure is prevented.
