H. A. DOTY. TYPE WRITER RIBBON.
No. 587,941. Patented Aug. 10,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY A. DOTY, OF NElV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
TYPE-WRITER RIBBON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,941, dated August 10, 1897.
Application filed March 16, 1896.
T 0 all whom, it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY A. DOTY, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improvement in 'lype-lVriter Ribbons; .and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a plan view of one end ofa typewriter ribbon with my securing device applied thereto; Fig. 2, a plan View of the blank strip to be applied to a ribbon.
-This invention relates to an improvement in type-writer ribbons. In most of the machines, as in the Remington, for instance, the ends of the ribbon are attached to short sections of tapes, which are secured to the winding-drums, and usually are attached with pins.
The object of this invention is to apply an adhesive substance to the ends of the ribbon, which substance will adhere to the tapes fixed to the machine; and it consists in the construction, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
My improvement will preferably consist of a strip A, of paper or other suitable material, formed with a flap B, and one surface of the strip and flap coated with an adhesive material. One of these strips will be applied to each end of the ribbon and the flap B Serial No. 583,380. (No model.)
turned down upon the opposite side of the ribbon, so as to inclose the end of the ribbon and leave a projecting gummed strip which, when moistened, may be caused to adhere to the tapes on the winding-drum of the typewriter. This strip not only forms a convenient method of securing the ribbons in position, but by protecting the ends of the ribbon enables it to be handled Without soiling the fingers.
WV'hile it is unnecessary that the ribbon should be very firmly secured in position, as the strain upon it is very slight,a small amount of adhesive material will be suflicient to securely hold it in position, yet permit it to be readily removed when required.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A type-writer ribbon having a strip applied to its ends, said strip being provided with a flap adapted to be turned down on the opposite side of the ribbon and projecting beyond the end thereof, said projecting end being coated with adhesive material, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
lIARRY A. DOTY.
