UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HENRY POW'ELL, OF LIMESTONE, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT BELL, OF LIMESTONE, FLORIDA.
ADJUSTABLE PLOW-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,323, dated January 14, 1902. Application filed September 26, 1901` Serial No. 76,694. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HENRY PowELL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Limestone, in the county of Valton and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvemen ts in Adjustable Plow-Bars,of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention has relation to improvements in plows, and is especially designed for attachment at the rear of the plow-standard to serve as a guide and steadier to prevent erratic lateral movement of the plowshare and the object is to provide a plow attachment of the kind herein described and for the purposes intended which is simple in construction, efficient in accomplishing the purpose, and durable in use.
The invention consists in the novel con-v struction of parts and their aggroupment in operative combination, as will be hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my improvements in the accompanying drawings, to be taken as a part of this specification, and wherein- Figure -1 is a perspective view of a plow looking from the rear and showing my improvements connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a View in elevation of the member of the plowbar which is attached to the rear face of the plow-standard. Fig. 3 is a side view in elevation of the plow-bar, showing the guide knife or blade arranged therein. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the drag member of the plowbar, showing the slot for the guide-blade.
In Fig. 1 is illustrated a form of plow to which myimprovements may be conveniently applied, and referring thereto l designates the plow-beam, provided with handles 2. 3 is the plow-standard, and 4 is the plow blade or share. These form no part ofthe novelty of my present invention, and all may be varied or changed and the invention adapted to the plow-standard.
Referring now to the drawings, the more particularly as disclosing the elements of my invention, 5 designates the member of the guide-bar adapted to be secured to the rear face of the plow-standard. The member 5 consists of a plate or flat bar shaped to'tit the plate 5 from turning on the bolt 7.
on the plow-standard and provided with a vertical slot 6, through which the plow-bolt 7 passes, and has thereona clamping-nut, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the plate is clamped in place to the standard. The elongated slot 6 permits the plate to be adjusted vertically. The upper end portion of the plate is forked or slotted, vas at 8, which engages or straddles the brace-bar 9 of the standard and prevents The lower end of the plate 5 is formed with a circular termination 10, formed on its inner face with radial ratchets or teeth 11, which interengage with similar formations on the guidebar, as hereinafter stated.
' l2 designates the guide-bar. u This consists of an integral bar of such length as may be desired, formed at its inner end with a round disk-shaped head 13, formed on its inner face with radial ratchets 0r corrugations 14C, which engage with their counterparts 11 on the plate 6, the ends being. secured together by a bolt 15 on which the guidebarA turns. In the guide-bar 12 is formed a longitudinally-arranged slot 16, extending vertically through the bar and having curved ends to conform to the curve of the plate, and in this slot 16 is adj ustably placed a-guide blade or bar 17, shaped as the segment of a circle and slidably disposed in the slot. The guide-bar is formed with a shoulder 18 and has a threaded aperture, in which a set-screw 19 engages and bears with its inner end against the guide blade or bar 1'7.
It will be perceived from the foregoing de scription, in connection with the drawings, that the plate of the guide-bar is vertically adjustable in its relation to the plow and that the guide-bar'may be adjusted on its pivotal bolt and held by the interengaging ratchets.
The guide-blade in cross-section is conical and is arranged in the slot with its sharp edge front, so that in the progress of the plow impediments or obstructions may be met and cut or turned aside. The rearward curve of the guide-blade presents a shearing edge to such impediments, and thus-lessons the force requisite to accomplish the purposes.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with the plow-standard and the standard-brace, of a plate formed IOO with a vertical elongated slot through which the plow-bolt engages and is clamped, and said plate having a forked upper end to engage the brace-bar of the standard, a guidebar formed with a slot and pivotally connected to the lower end of said plate, a guideblade adjustably placed in'said slot, and a set-screw to clamp the blade in set position.
2. The combination with the plow-standard and the standard-brace, of a plate formed With a vertically-elem gated slot through which the plow-bolt passes and is clamped and formed with a forked upper end to engage the standard-brace and provided with a disk at its lower end having corrugations thereon, a guide-bar formed with adisk at its inner end having corrugations to engage the corrugations of the disk ou the plate, and a curved slot extending vertically through the guidebar, a curved guide-blade adj ust-ably placed
