Be it known that I, HORACE A. JANES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovel-Plows, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in shovel-plows, and provides a construction of this class of agricultural implements in'which the plow-point is reversibly mounted in such a manner that the same may be readily detached and reversed in order that it may be resharpened during the use of the implement as the same is advanced over the field in the practical operation thereof.

The invention further resides in the provision of a peculiar furrow-turning attachment which is of such a nature that the plow may be readily converted into a right or left hand plow, as found necessary and desirable under actual conditions of service.

The invention aims to provide a general simplicity of structure of the implement, admitting of adjustment and detachment of the parts thereof by a person of average skill and providing a structure conducive to cheapness and having a maximum degree ofsubstantiality.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for'elfecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a plow embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the plow, point removed, showing the deflector in position in full lines and indicating the position of the deflector when thrown to one side in dotted lines.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Describing the invention specifically, the numeral 1 indicates the standard of a plow,

and the numeral 2 a shovel, the general formation of the latter being similar to many of those at present in use. The shovel 2 is double-pointed and comprises a flat body 3 and a reversible point 4. The point 4, as above mentioned, is double-pointed, having double cutting edges. The lower extremity of the body 3 of the shovel is provided with a triangular recess 5, and the upper portion of the reversible point 4: is of somewhat triangular formation, so as to fit snugly in the recess 5 aforesaid. The point 4 is secured to the body of the shovel 2 by a suitable fastening, such as a bolt 6, and this fastening may be readily detached in order that the point 4 may be reversed. The operation of the plow effects a Wearing action of the soil upon the lower cutting edges of the plow 4, which is effective in dulling said edges, so that when the upper cutting edges have become sharp the point may be quickly reversed in order to bring the sharpening portions thereof into play. The dulled portions will of course be resharpened by the wear upon the under sides of the point, as before premised upon.

The means for converting the plow from a right-hand to a left-hand implement consists of a furrow-turning attachment 7, comprising a body the sides of which slope downwardly and rearwardly, as shown at 8, extending from a line about central of the side edges thereof. The attachment 7 is flat on the under side and is pivoted to the upper end portion of the shovehbody 3, as shown at 9, the pivot 9 being disposed between the side edges of the attachment, this admitting of a pivotal move ment of the part 7 in a manner readily apparent. The attachment in general structure is of triangular shape, the lower end thereof being pointed, whereas the rear or upper end is widened in order to give the necessary slope to the sides, by which the furrow is deflected either to the right or to the left. When it is desired to throw the earth upon both sides of the implement, the attachment 7 is so adjusted that the point or lower end thereof is positioned about intermediate the side edges of the shovel 2. If it is desired to throw the earth to the right, the point of the attachment 7 is moved toward the left edge portion of the shovel, so that the earth will be thrown in the proper direction. By disposing the attachment in an opposite position the earth may be directed to the left, and it will be noted that in adjusting the attachment it is not necessary to detach or apply parts, but it is only requisite that the operator force the member 7 in the direction described in order to throw the earth at the proper angle.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is- In a plow, the combination of a shovel connprising a fiat body, and a furrow-turning attachment consisting of a body of approximately triangular form pivoted to the upper side of the shovel aforesaid, said body having its Wider end portion uppermost and having opposite sides sloping from a line longitudinally central thereof, the lower pointed end of the attachment being adapted to be shifted toward and from the side edges of the shovel for the purpose specified. o In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
