SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,294, dated January 14, 1902.
Application filed May 4, 1901. Serial No. 58,834. (No model.)
toilet-paper to provide cabinets for their pa-' trons in which the paper may be placed and subsequently withdrawn in single sheets. These cabinets have been furnished or leased to the patrons free of charge so long as the paper furnished by the owner of the cabinet is used. It has been found, however, that nu merous patrons will use the cabinets for paper purchased of others, and rival'dealers have frequently encouraged this practice by preparing and selling paper packages of the exact size required to fit the cabinets, thus defrau ding the owner of the cabinets, who has been put to a large expense in providing them.
In a former application, filed October 9, 1900, Serial No. 32,496, for Letters Patent of the United States for paper holders and folders, I have shown a form of cabinet the side walls of which are provided with inwardly-projecting flanges extending from the back or rear wall to a point near the discharge-rollers, which are centrally located adjacent tow the front wall, the function of these flanges being to support a loose package of sheets of paper within the cabinet-walls to prevent the insertion of any package of paper which is not specially formed to fit the cabinet.
The object of the presentinvention is to provide a form of package adapted to fit the cabinet shown in the aforesaid application, the peculiar form of the package being designed to serve the double purpose of securing a support in the cabinet and preventing fraud, as the shape of the cabinet will preclude the insertion of other paper than that made in accordance with the construction herein claimed.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of my invention.
The package 1 is formed of a series of flatlydisposed sheets of "paper, preferably rectangular in form and unsecured at any point. The side edges of the package are provided with notches 2 and 3, which extendinwardly and partially subdivide the package at or near its transverse median line. It will be observed that these notches are coincident for all the sheets of the package, and when the package is inserted in the cabinet the notches are adapted to register with the corresponding side flanges of the cabinet, the flanges then serving to support the paper by their engagement in the notches, while preventing paper from being inserted in the cabinet, which is not similarly notched. The notches and flanges are of such depth thatit the sheets were made no wider than the distance between the notches they would be useless.
It will be understood that I do not limit the scope of this invention to the provision of two notches, as a single notch in one side of the package may be employed, if desired, although for the purpose of adequately supporting the paper in the cabinet two notches should be formed in the opposing sides.
It will be observed that the package is rectangular in form, and the notches are formed in the longer sides near the center or transverse median line or so as to divide the sheets of the package into two rectangular portions having their longer sides extending transversely of the package, the sheets being adapted to be folded on the line of the notches. This construction enables me to provide sheets of the requisite size without making the package so long that the sheets will sag or double within the cabinet. As the packages are prepared for use in the specific style of cabinet above referred to, which feeds the sheets in a double or folded position, it is obvious that the sheets must be of such size and shape and the notches so located that each section will form a complete sheet on each side of the notch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A toilet-paper package, comprising a series of flatly-disposed, rectangular sheets of tissuepaper, said package being provided with notches in its longer side edges, adapted 1 portion of the sheets, except as a connection to partially subdivide the sheets into two recbetween the upper and lower portions, subtangular portions having their longer side stantially for the purpose set forth.
edges extending transversely of the package, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 5 substantially for the purpose set forth. in the presence of two witnesses.
O a. A tollet paper package, comprislng a se FRANK SCHILZ ries of flatly-disposed sheets of paper, and
having notches in its side edges at or near its Witnesses:
transverse median line, of such depth as to LEVERETT 0. WHEELER, 1o practically destroy the utility of the central LYMAN G. WHEELER.
