IMPROVED GOAT AND HAT-HOOK.
dlgs tlgrhalt maar tt ilr that ttttts rtnrt inr uniting and at tigesame.
'IO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN: f
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHMITT, ot' No. 148 `East Twenty-Eighth street, have invented a new and improved Coat and HatdIook; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional front elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate correspondingparts.
This invention relatcs to a coat and hat-hook, which consists of two hinged jaws, which areprovidcd with soft and elastic tips at their ends, and which are arranged, in combination with a locking device, in such a manuel' that a hat or other similar article can be clamped between them, and that said hat will not be liable t-o-be injured, and will be firmly retained as long as the locking device is fastened or closed. The lower-hoek jaw is provided with nipper-like arms, which serve to catch hold of the coatcollar or other portion of the garment, and which retain the same securely, and prevent the garment from being removed as long as thc locking device is closed; If desired, the hat and coat can be secured in the hook simultaneously, and the danger of having either of these articles stolen or exchanged is avoided, or at least materially reduced.
A represents a coat and hathoolt, which is composed ot' two hook-shaped jaws, B C, which are connected to the bed-plate D by pivots b c, as clearly shown in fig. l of the drawing, and which are so arranged that thcjaw B turns up while the jaw C turns in, as indicated by arrows marked near the same in said figure. From the upper end ofthe hook-jaw B projects a lip, a, and if said `jaw is turned down as far as it will go, a spring-latch, E, can bemade to catch under said lip, and ja-w B is locked. The spring-latch E is situated in a suitable cavity of the bed-plate D, and it is operated by a key, K, which is inserted inte a key-hole in said bcd-platc, or, instead of the spring-latch, a sliding bolt or any other suitable mechanism can be employed for the purpose of locking the hook-jaw B. When this jaw is locked, its tip is in such a position that it prei-ents thel hoolbjaw C from hcing turned inward on its pivot c, and abat er other article placed between the tips ot' the two hook-jaws cannot be removed until the jaw B is unlocked. The tips of the two hook-jaws B C are protected by caps d, of India rubber or other soft and eiastic material, so that the hat or other article heldbetwcen said tips is not injured. The hook-jaw C is so constructed that the same forms a clamp, F, composed of the movablcjawf and the stationary jaw g. When the hook-jaw C is turned in, the clamp opens, and the collar or any other part of a coat or other garment can be introduced between the same, and when the hook-jaw C is turned back to its original position, the collar or other part of the garment is firmly held between the clamp, and said garment cannot be removed unless thc hookA C is turned in. The loop of the coat or other garment may be passed over the hook-jaw C, so that the garment is supported if the clamp F is opened. When the upper hook is locked it is somenhat inside of the lower hook, so that the latter cannot be turned in. The hat is intended to be firmly clamped between the elastic tips` so that it would occupy some time to work it out, particularly if the coat is between the clamps.
By this arrangement the hat and coat or other garment can bc hung up and locked simultaneously, and the danger of having these articles stolen orexchanged is avoided, or at least materially reduced.
What- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The hinged hookjaws B C, in combination with a spring-latch or other locking device, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with-thc hoek-jaws B C, I claim the elastic tip tZ, suilistantially as and forthe purpose described. I
3. The clamp F, in combination with the hook-jaws B and with a suitable locking device, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM SCHMITT.
