JOHN HENRY LEONHARD, OF IIALEDON, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED SHlPPiNG-BOX, PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,165, dated December 31, 1901. Application filed June 10, 1901. Serial No. 63,910. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY LEONHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haledon, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Shipping-Box, Paper Holder and Cutter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to let-ters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a box or container for roll-paper so constructed as to be convertible either for use for shipping or for storing purposes and provided with means whereby so much of the paper as from time to time is wanted may be cutoff from the ro l.
Theinvention will be found fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sectional views of the invention as seen in Fig. l, these iigures respectively showing the knife or cutter out of and in operative position. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of a modified form of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a sectional perspective view of another modified form of the invention.
In said drawings, d designates a box or container of preferably rectangular form. One wall b of this box is dovetailed into the box, so that it may be drawn or slid out of place to permit the roll of paper o to be introduced into the box. This Wall may be secured in its closed position by a pin d, which penetrates said wall and projects into the Wall e of the box, as at f. This pin may he in the form of a nail, and there may be several of them, if desired. When the wall h is in closed position, its edge g preferably seats in a groove h in the wall t' of the box, so as to make atight joint.
On the bottom of the box-that is to say, against the inner surface of the wall i-I provide a block or blocks j, having their top surfaces inclined toward the removable Wall b. The object of inclining the top surfaces of the blocks is to effect the normal maintaining of the roll in one position when the paper is being drawn out.
Inside of the .box and near the bottom of the Wall b is pivoted, as at 7f3, a knife Z. Being pivoted, this knife may be folded into the box, as seen in Fig. 2, or by sliding the Wall b partly out the cutting edge of the knife Z may be projected out of the box, as seen in Fig. 3, to be thereupon held securely in place by setting the lower edge of the Wall b against it, the pin d being now inserted in a hole m in the wall b as well as the hole f to secure said wall rigidly in place. By having the knife edge protrude from the box there is always a small portion of the paper left projecting after each cutting, which can be gotten hold of to draw out more of the paper. If desired, the paper may extend under the knife so as to be cut by an upwardly-directed pull against its edge instead of over the knife, as in that form of my invention already described. This modification is shown in Fig. 4, Where the knife is pivoted at n. on the wall b instead of on the Wall t', as at 7e in Fig. 3.
In the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the knife Z is secured rigidly to the block or blocks j, which are arranged to slide forwardly on the bottom Wall i. The Wall b is provided at its lower corners with lugs o, which are adapted to seat in recesses p in the block or blocks, so as to keep the block or blocks from sliding back when the pressure in cutting the paper is applied. The paper in this case feeds out through a slot q, which is produced by forming the wall b with the projections o.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, `is
l. As an article of manufacture, the combination of a substantially rectangular box, one of two meeting walls of said box being arranged to slide to and from the other and the other of said walls being the base-Wall of the box, a blockV having its top surface inclined toward said sliding wall and arranged on the base-wall, the block being adapted to sustain a roll of paper, the end of said paper being adapted to protrude between said walls, and a knife arranged in the box and movable so IOO as to protrude therefrom between said Walls with its edge exposed, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, the coinbination of a substantially rectangular box, one of tWo meeting Walls of said box being arranged to slide to and from the other and the other of said Walls being the base-Wall of the box, blocks having their top surfaces inclined toward said sliding Wall and arranged on the base-Wall, the blocks being adapted to sustain a roll of paper, the end of said paper being adapted to protrude` between said Walls, a
