Similar letters of4 reference indicate corresponding' parts infthescverul iigures.
The nature of this invention consists in the a i licatin toa. slidin l-,boltlotf two or 1ho`re toothediwh'eels, i i i i i PP i `g` 4 i i which are' both free to rotte independentllyl of jeach other, niid-\vhich hrendjustedlaui oet for effecting-thejif i ferent combinations of numberghymeans of `au index-plate and `hundma.rrux'igetl outside ofthe lock use, @nifl-, so applied tothe boltthut it shall serve es Ia. means of `shoetin it back `and forth,` uswill` be hereinofter eshrihed. It also consists iujsilotting'the' toothed permntntion wheels insuchfinupuer that `-whe11 f tlie holt'isunloelredK i these wheels can be turned partially around, so as not to leave Vthem inZthelpositiou,rquiredlforunlocking the4 lhereinuter expltined.l v i Y i t i .y i
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe onepructieahmodclof crrybolt, thereby4preventing` .the combination of numbers bywhich th'eloekis set from 'being detected, es will be` ing it into effect. l y i mit The drawings represent my invention applied to-:t mortise-loek. A` is the lock-cuse und B is the sliding-I holt. This bolt has atulrulur collar, B', formed on one sideueur its inner end, which projects-perpendiculurly from seid side, and-pessfesi'freely through an oblong slot, a, which is made through one side of the loekseuseof sufficient length te allow the bolt to be shot back 'and forth the required distance, directly in liuc with the' centre of' the tubular collar a, und' en the inside of thei slottedfaee-plate is h. lug, b, shown in `figs. 2, 3, and*1,'on'e'edge` of which may be slightly bevellcd, for a purpose which will hey hereinafter described; 4and directly opposite this lug b, and in the same plane, is acorrespondinglug, b', whiclris formedomtheopposite faceplate of-the lock:- ouse, as shown in g. 3. C D are two wheels of the sume diameter, having',r sptnsorteethA formed in their periph-` cries like gear-wheels. The wheel() is applied upon the inner end of ultubulur sha-ft; c, which passes through the collar B', and carries on its outer end, outside of the lock-caso, n graduated idex-wheel or disk, E. This wheel C is secured to its tubular shaft by means of a spring-spider, F, having threenrms, -one of which, d, has a toothl formed on it tha-t enters one of the teeth ofits wheel C. From thece'ntral ring or hub ofthe spiderF lugs project rand enter recesses formed in the end of the tubular shaft c, ushshown in iig. 2. `Whcn the `tooth on arm d is in a space between any two of the teeth of wheel'C, this wheel will turnwith its shaft c; butwhen seidtooth is forced inward from between said teeth, thewheel is free to turn around its shaft. Thewheel D, which is constructed in-all respects like wheel C, is applied upon the inner cylindrical end of u solid shaft, e, and held in place thereon by means of u washer und screw, us shown in figs. 3 a-ndfl.'` This wheel D also provided with a. spider, G, which is keyed fast upon its shaft e, und which also `has e. tooth formed uponone ofA its armsf, that is cdapted to enter any one of the spaces between the teeth of its wheel, and thus connect the letter to its-shaft, so as to turn with it, It desirable, more than two spurred wheels mayb-e employed; but for the purpose .of illustratingrmy invention, two ofv these wheels will answer, and for simple fornis"of door-and cabinet locks,only two-wheels need be employed. Euch one of Vthese wheclsf'C D has a slotV cut in it, between two of itsteeth, which communicates withaconcentric slot,g, of suiicient' length to allow the wheel to turn one-` `quarter round, more or less. The slots z'z" areiof suilicient width to allow of the passage el the respect-ive lugs h thrughthem, when the bolt `is moved buckr'unlocked, and the concentric slots gthroughaid wheelsere equal in width to 'the lengthoi their respective lugs b b,.so that when the bolt is unlocked the' wheels may he turnedyas shown iug. 2, und the slots or openings i z" moved to oneside or ,the other of the said lugs. The,` shaft e which 4carries the wheel D on its inner end, as described,'has n. knob, l), secured onits outer end, from which-.projects chaud,- 71, that points to certain numbers or marks which are mude upcintl1eja'ce of thefindex.
disk E, as shown in tig. l.f iA circular disk, H, is Secured upon the outer endet' the. tubular collar B', as shown in figs. 1 and 4, which has an index-mark upon its face, pointing inward to the circumference of-fthe disk E, so that by turning` the lutterfauy one n'f the marks or numbers thereon ean'hc made to register with the said index mark. v l' l l y Thelocknis adjusted for usev by turningr lthe two permutation wheels C and l.) until their 4radial 'slots are in line with their fixed lugs b Il', and then noting the positions of the index-hand It and index-wlmcl E. Suppose the slot i.' in wheel C stood'in line'with its lug I, when the number 19 on the index-wheel E registered withthe index-mark onthe disk H, and the slot-1f in wheel D stood in', line with its lug b', when the index-hand L Von shaft e pointed at number 16 on thc face of the index-wheel. Whenever the indices are adjustedas above stated, the belt can be moved bach and fort-h. To change thiseombinatiou a pin, K, shownin fig. 5, is inserted through a.` hole,j, which is made through the lock-case, as shown in figs. 1V and4and brought against the tooth or arm d of the spider F; then, by pressing the tooth inward,l and at the same time turning the index-plate, this tooth ,will-bc moved into another, notch between the teeth of the wheel C,.thus,ch anging the combination tremiti-19 to 15-18, and if said tooth'bc changed another notch, thecombination will stand 14-17, and so on.` I The tooth on armfwhich engages the wheel D with its4 shaft c, is adjustedfrom vnotch to notchl precisely in the nanncr above described, by ineans of the key or pin`K. When the 'toothed' arms dfare brought 'opposite the holes which are made through the lock-caso for admitting the pin K, the numbers on the index-plates corresponding to such positions' shou-ld be remembered or recorded, so that the combinations can he changed when desired. It will be seen lthtwhen the boltis shot back the wheel C Dfmay be turned partially around, thus avoiding the combination by whichthe lock is set from being discovered when the bolt is unlocked.` It will'also be seen that the permutation wheels C D, their shafts, and the index-disks andpointer, are all applied t'o the bolt, so as to move with it back-ward and forward. v 2 Y Y l Having described my invention, what II claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is'- 1. The application to Vn. slidingbolt of the toothed and notched wheels C I ),'havin,gl suitable indicesapplied to their shafts, so that said wheels and indices shall move with this bolt, substantialiy as described.
2. Providing a concentric slot in the toothed wheel or wheels within which the' lugs b'b may be received,
for the purpose of allowing said wheels to be turned whenthe bolt is unlocked, substantially as ldescribed;
S The adjustable toothed spiders F Gr, or their equivalents, applied to the toothed anld'slotted wheels C I), in combination with the lugs b Za and devices for indicating thepositions of the said slots it" in said wheels when in line withv said lugs, subst-autiall)lr as described.
