SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,792, dated December 10, 1901.

Be it known that I, EDWARD I. ROOT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mucilage; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in mucilage, my object being to provide an arti cle of this class which shall be well adapted for office use and which may also be conveniently carried in the pocket, whereby it is accessible at all times.

The invention will now be described in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the article detached from the case. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 isa longitudinal sectiontaken through the article shown in connection with the case. Fig. lis a cross-section of the same.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.

Let the numeral 5 designate a block of wood or other suit-able material having a fiat base 5, opposite vertical walls 5, opposite beveled sides 5 and opposite beveled ends 5 Through this block longitudinally is formed a groove, in which is inserted and fastened a tongue 6, preferably formed from the flat piece of wood. This tongue protrudes or projects beyond the beveled portion of the block, and the mucilage '7 is built thereon by repeatedly dipping the tongue in liquid mucilage of suitable consistency and allowing it to dry or harden, thus building it layer upon layer until the desired quantity is on the tongue. As shown in the drawings, the mucilage covers the protruding portion of the tongue and overlaps the beveled portion of the block.

For convenience the article is inserted in a always projects sufficiently from the case to be easily removed. When it is desired to use the article, the mucilage portion thereof is moistened by dipping it in water or otherwise, after which it may be set upon the base 5 which forms a sufficiently stable support to keep it from tipping over and soiling the surrounding articles. After it has stood a short time-say from a half a minute to a minute, depending upon the degree of hardness that the mucilage has attained-it is ready for use. The block part is taken in the hand while applying the mucilage, which is rubbed on the part or parts to be gummed without danger of soiling the fingers, which never come in contact with the mucilage proper.

While I prefer this specific construction shown in the drawings, it must be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, as many other forms may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a suitable block having a quantity of mucilage applied thereto exteriorly in such a manner as to inclose and adhere to a portion of the block while a portion of the block is exposed or free from mucilage to permit the article to be handled without touching the mucilage portion.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a device composed of a block provided with a groove in which is inserted a protruding tongue upon which is built a quantity of mucilage or gummy material which incloses and adheres to said tongue.

8. As an improved article of manufacture, a block having a flat base and a reduced opposite portion upon which a quantity of mucilage is built whereby it incloses and adheres to said block portion, the parts surrounding the fiat surface being free from mucilage to facilitate handling.

4. The combination of a case open on one side, of an article comprising a block having a beveled portion to facilitate entrance to the case, flat sides to fit into the case, the block having a reduced portion opposite the base upon which is built a quantity of mucilage in such a manner that it inoloses and adheres such that when the article is inserted in the case, the mucilage portion does not touch its inner surface.
