UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD BOHN, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
SKIRT-WAISTBAND FASTENER AND SKIRT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,973, dated December 3, 1901. Application filed April 26,1901. Serial No. 57,576. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BOHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Waistband Fasteners and Skirt-Supporters and I do hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains:
to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a waistband-fastener and skirt-supporter of that class in which a plate with twin hooks at one edge thereof and a plate with twin eyes in its body adapted to be engaged by said hooks are respectively attached to the opposite surfaces adjacent to the ends of said waistband, in which a spring-catch is provided between said twin hooks to engage against an edge projecting lip or ridge arranged between the eyesof said second plate, and in which a hook is provided at one end of the eye-plate to engage an eye secured to the dress-body.
The object of the invention is to provide a skirt-waistband fastener and skirtholder that will securely close said band and support said skirt by'invisible means yet with great comfort to the wearer. Said fastener will not undo, unhook, or open without hand assistance.
The elements of the invention will severally and at large appear in the following description, and they will be separately and combinedly set forth or pointed out in the appended claim.
The purposes of the invention are attained by the devices and means illustrated in the accompanying drawings with similar reference characters to designate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a back view of a portion of a womans dress-body and skirt having a waistband with the elements of the invention in place thereon, showing them in the position of supporting the skirt, which is shown to be open or unfastened; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation taken on the line .2 z in Fig. Land viewed from the left, showing said elements in engagement or hooked; Fig. 3, a back view in perspective of the hookplate removed from Fig. 1; Fig. at, a similar view of the eyeplate also removed from Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a similar view of the single eye-plate likewise removed from Fig. 1. Figs. 6 and 7 are enlarged sectional elevations taken, respectively, on the lines 00 a: and y y in Figs. 3 and 4., showing the parts in engagement; and Fig. 8 shows three views a o w, in which the eye-plate is secured in position by means of points folded over on a retaining-plate having at one end the supporting-hook with the cloth omitted.
In the drawings, A designates the body or waist garment of a womans dress viewed from the rear; 3, the skirt of said garment; B, the waistband of said skirt, and I) Z) designate, respectively, the overlapping ends of said band. To the inner surface of the end I) is rigidly secured a plate 0, as by stitching through orifices c, said plate having at one edge a pair of hooks c c, folded back over its body and adapted to engage an eye-plate, yet to be described, holding the skirt closed or clasped in position. Between the hooks is a spring-tongue c projecting from the forward edge of the hook-plate and folded back over its body, forming an inclined plane 0 as shown, with a curved recess or inward bend 0 adjacent to the forward end of the fold. To the outer surface of the end b is rigidly secured a plate D, as by stitching through orifices d. The body of the plate is preferably bent and shaped, as shown, having portions d d d to engage on the cloth and in i which are placed said orifices 01. Between the end two and the middle one of these portions are raised formations d", constituting the eyes of the invention and adapted to be engaged by the hooks o a, before mentioned, while the central portion d at its outer edge is provided with an upwardly-projecting rib or ridge d adapted to ride up on the plane of the spring-tongue during the process of hooking the ends of the skirt-waistband together, and by engaging against the forward end of the fold or in the recess a will hold said hooks in engagement, preventing the skirt-band from opening or unhooking without hand assistance. At one end of the plate, as at the upper edgeof the portion (Z is an inward projection (l to the required extent or the thickness of the cloth in the waistband, which it is preferably made to pierce, and having lv at its inner end an upwardly-extending arm with its extremity folded inwardly and downwardly, forming a retroverted hook 01 adapted to engage in an eye-plate D, secured to the dress-body, as shown, Figs. 1 and 2, supporting the skirt. This eye may he a loop of thread, a buttonhole, or the edge of a hem.
When so desired, the portions d d d of the eye-plate D may be modified so as to have inwardly-projecting arms or fingers d to pierce the cloth, pass through the apertures in a plate D and have their extremities d folded over and pressed'down on said latter plate, thus securing the eye-plate in position Without stitching, while in place of the portions (1' and d are end ears d to rest on the,
cloth. In this instance the skirt-supporting hook d is made integral with the upper end of the plate D making said hook by reason of the securing -of the plates together part and parcel of the plate D.
Being aware that hooks and eyes, as well as various devices, such as clasps and hooks engaging on bars or plates, have heretofore been in use for closing and supporting garments and even skirts, no claim is therefore made broadly; but
NVhat is considered new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
' A skirt closing and supporting device comprising a plate, 0, adapted to be secured to one end of a skirt-waistband, said plate having the outer edge twin hooks, c c, with the folded-over spring-tongue, c therebetween, said tongue constituting the inclined plane, 0 and having the fold-recess, 0 the plate, D, adapted to be secured to the other end of said skirt-Waistband, said latter plate having the portions, cl (1 CF, and the raised formations, 01 one between each of said portions, cl (1 and said portion, 01 and said portion, (1 having the ridge or rib,-d and said portion, 01 having the inward projection, d, with the upwardly-extending arm and the retroverted hook, (Z at the extremity thereof; and the eye, D, secured to the dress-body; all substantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD BOHN.
