UNITED STATI-3s PATENT Ormes. 4
ARTHUR E. SHAW AND EDWARD S. SANDERSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO THE PENNSYLVANIA GLOBE GAS LIGHT COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPO- RATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
STREET-LIGHT.
SPEGEFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,663, dated November 26, 1901.
Application iled August 2, 1901. Serial No. 70,656. (No model.)
To all whom t 11mg/ concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR E. SHAW and EDWARD S. SANDERSON, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Philadelphia, iu the county of Philadelphia and State oi' Pennsylvania,
have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Lights, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to street-lights, and more particularly to si gn-holders for the same, the object being to provide simple, efficient, comparatively inexpensive, and readily adjustable and detachable means for supporting advertising-signs of the sort usually associated with street-lights.
To the ends stated the invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope ofthe invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure l is an elevational View of a Welsbach street-light with our improved signholder applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the sign-holder, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view ot' separate parts of the holder.
Having reference to the drawings, l indicates the base or that part of y the holder which is normally stationary, and the same has its top hanged and provided with an open slot 2 to aord ready means of attachment to a suitable part-for instance, the ring ot, which supports the dome of the lamp. The lower edge of the base is transversely extended, as at 3, and provided with a flange or heel 4, upon which rests the glass sign-section b. There is also provided on said stationary member a longitudinally-ranging raised part or seat 5, which is in a common plane with the edge of the flange 4, and said raised portion or seat is served with countersunk parts 6 for the reception of screws or bolts 7. The seat 5 may be cast with the base member or be otherwise applied thereto.
8 is a. thin met-al plate of the general shape of the base, being provided with transverse portions 9, which coperate with the arms 3 of the base to hold the sign-section in position. The keeperor member 8 has the transversely-extending slots 10 and the verticallyranging slots l1, which merge with said other slots. The screws 7 pass through 'these slots and serve to adjusiably retain thc keeper upon the seat 5. The keeper 8 being shiftable longitudinally and laterally is of great value in mounting and securing glass streetsigns, which are usually of ring form applied iu foursections.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit ,and scope of the same. Hence we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction andarrangement of parts hereinabove described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A sign-holder comprising a support having a longitudinally-ranging rib or seat and a bottom liange, and an adjustable keeper cooperating with said support, substantially as described.
2. A sign-holder comprising a support having a longitudinally-ranging rib or seat centrally thereof, and a bottom flange, and a keeper adapted for eudwise and lateral movement on said rib and having its base normally resting on said iiange, substantially as described.
3. A sign-holder comprising a support having top and bottom flanges, and an adjustable keeper coperating with said support and having its base normally resting on said bottom flange, substantially as described.
4.. A sign-holder comprising a support having top and bottom flanges, said top flange being provided with an open slot, and an adjustable keeper coperating with said support and having its base normally resting on said bottom flange, substantially as described.
5. A sign-holder comprising a support having top and bottom flanges, said top flange being directed inward and provided-with an open slot, and an adjustable keeper coperating with said support and having its base normally resting on said bottom flange, substantially as described.
6. A sign-holder comprising a support having top and bottom flanges, said top flange being provided with an open slot, and said support having a longitudinally-ranging rib orseat, and a keeper adapted and arranged for endwise and lateral movement on Said rib or seat and havingits base provided with translo verse extensions or arms, which normally rest on said bottom flange, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto signed our names inthe presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
