BUST-FORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,099, dated November 19, 1901. Application filed July 23, 1901. Serial No. 69,379. (No model.)
T0 (ZZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILY -H. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bust-Form, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to bust-forms such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States No. 671,257, granted to me April 2, 1901.
The object of my present invention is to improve my former one in such a manner that the bust-form will retain its shape for a longer time and be alsomore natural in appearance.
The invention consists: in providing the bust-form shown and described in my aforesaid patent with an inner portion or filling which conforms to it in shape.
The details of construction and combination of parts are as hereinafter described.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the improvement, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the same with parts. broken out.
The bust-form is attached to the upper front edge of a corset A and consists, essentially, of two parts B, alike in construction, so that it suffices to describe but one in detail. Each of the parts B consists, essentially, of a shell or receptacle made of an inner plain piece 0 of a fabric material and an outer shirred piece 0 of a fabric material, the edges of the pieces being secured together, the straight lower edge of the shell supporting a pocket or sheath D for the reception of a flexible curved bottom piece E of steel or other suitable material for giving the desired curvature to the lower edge of the shell, and consequently to the entire part B. In this shell is placed a filling F, consisting of an inner stifioning fabric F, an outer shirred fabric F and a stuffing F of cotton=batting or similar fiulfy material, for filling out the shell and giving the desired curvature to the outer piece C of the shell, and consequently to the part B. By having this stiffening fabric F on the inside of the stuffing adjacent to the inner plain piece (J of the shell it is evident that the desired stiffness is given to the form and at the same time the fullness and curvature of the outer portion of the bust-form are maintained. It will be noted that the inner stifiened fabric F and the outer shirred fabric F of the filling conform to the corresponding portions of the shell or receptacle.
Itis understoodthat the shirred outer pieces 0 h allow sufficient opening of the stufiing to give the desired curvature to the bust-form and at the same time allow each part to readily conform to busts of "different sizes without alteration in the form.
In the manufacture of bust-forms the filling F is placed in the shell, and then the several parts are sewed together-that is, the stitches for the half-round top edge of the shell portion pass through the top edge of the filling, and the stitches for the lower edge of the shell pass through the lower edge of the filling and through the top edge of the pocket or sheath D, so that all the parts are firmly se-' cured together-and after the bottom piece E is placed in the sheath or pocket the ends thereof are closed by sewing to prevent the bottom piece from falling out.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, the
bust-form hereinbefore described, consisting Witnesses:
CHAS. CLYDE WALL, CAMB'ELERG BELL.
