GARMENT-SUPPORTING CLASP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,880, dated November 19, 1901. Application filed February 20, 1901. Serial No. 48,125- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES F. Arwoon,a citizen of the United States, residingin Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Supporting Clasps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of garment-supporting clasps in which the device is adapted to be attached to a tab, band, or other suspending contrivance and to engage with a garment from which another garment is to be suspended or with the garment to be suspended, as desired, by means of pointed ends which are guarded when the clasp is in use.

The nature of the invention is fully described below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved clasp. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.

Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the device attached to a suspendingtab. Fig. 5 is a central cross-section of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention comprises an integral piece of wire pointed at its ends and bent into substantially the shape shown and a connecting sleeve or clamp which connects two members or portions of said wire. The central portion a of the wire is straight and is bent horizontally inward at ainto tongues 12, whose in nor ends are curved at b and whose opposite sides or wires are parallel with each other and nearly parallel with the portion at. These tongues constitute guards for the sharp ends of the device, and the portion of the wire which forms the upper edge of each tongue 11 is bent at 19 into the portion 0, which is over and parallel with the portion a, and thence each part of the'wire is bent up and back upon itself to constitute a member e, the lower ends of which members are pointed and extend down opposite but not below the guards b, springing normally outward at substantially the angle indicated in Fig. 3.

It will be seen that the wire, with the exception of the part a, is in two substantially similar parts, each having a member 6, and these parts or members are prevented from spreading or separating by means of a sleeve or clamp g, into the opposite ends of which the inner ends of the portions 0 extend and through openings in which the portions 6 extend, as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1

and 2.

The members care for engagement with the garment, while the horizontal portions a c constitute means for the attachment to the clasp of a tab or tape 8. The pointed ends of the members 6 are sprung nearly together and thrust through the upper portion of the tab, which is pushed over the members down upon the portions 0 and g, the main portion of the tab extending over said portions 0 and g and down between the portion a and the guards I), while the extreme end 5' of the tab lies between the main portion .9 thereof and the guards b.

The clasp, with its pointed ends in the position indicated in Fig. 8, is thrust througlfand thereby engaged with any garment, as described, and the pointed ends then pressed toward each other inward and allowed to spring behind the guards b, and thus prevented from injuring the person of the wearer.

It will be seen that this contrivance oombines the functions of a safety-pin with those of a clasp.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The herein-described garment-supporting clasp, comprising a Wire formed into the main portion or body which consists of the parallel parts a and 0 provided with the inwardly-turned guards b, b; the members e extending at right angles with the portions a, b, c and eachbent back upon itself and having a pointed end, said pointed ends extending down opposite the guards and adapted to be pressed toward each other between the innor ends of the guards and to spring normally apart behind them; and the connecting sleeve or clamp g folded around the portions b at the points where they are bent into the portions e, whereby the members e are connected at their lower ends and are prevented from spreading, substantially as described.
