UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcs.
GEORGE WVASHINGTON BOOZER, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
WRENCH.
SPEGIFIOATIQN fonning part of Letters Patent No. 686,437, dated November 12, 1901.
' Application filed February 26, 1901. Serial No. 48,941. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON BOOZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in wrenches; and it consists in the improved means for operating the movable jaw thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a similar View, but showing the movable jaw in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a pivoted lever-plate, together with connecting-link used in the operation of shifting the lower jaw; and Fig. a is a cross-section upon the line 4 4: of Fig. 2.
a represents the shank of the wrench, having a handle Z) and fixed jaw 0.
cl represents the movable jaw, which is cut away so as to leave the tWo ears e and f,which surround the shank a. On the side opposite these ears the movable jaw is provided with a cut-away portion or recess g, largest at the top, as shown in Fig. 2. In this enlarged portion is fitted the movable plate h, which is free to move up and down to a certain distance; but on account of the shape of the recess g the outer edge of said plate is capable only of a comparatively limited movement. The plate h is provided on its underneath side with an eyelet 7c, and to this eyelet is secured a link or pin of any suitable construction, but preferably as shown in the drawings, where j represents a solid base portion having the upwardly-projecting link portion This link portion is secured to the eyelet it of the plate It in any suitable manner, and the plate his supported by the link j,tl1rough the medium of a spring 2', which encircles the link j and eyelet It and creates an upward pressure on the plate It. The movable plate It should rest when in its locked position at an angle approximately of about eighty degrees.
The baseportionj of the link or pin j passes through and is guided by a small hole 8, out through the lower portion of the movable jaw and is internally screw-threaded to receive the threads r of an adjustment pin or screw Z, which engages with the lever-plate m and by this means regulates the distance of the locking-plate h from the lever-plate m. This lever-plate m is provided with a bearingo, which engages a pivot-plate n on the lower part of the movable jaw. The lever-plate m is also provided with a recess q,through which the adjustment screw or pin 1 passes. The lever-plate is provided with projections 19, upon which the operator puts his finger or thumb when he desires to shift the movable The operation of shifting the jaw is as follows: The operator by means of the projections 19 presses down the lever-plate m, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This compresses the spring t' and draws down the plate h into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. While in this position, the movable jaw may be slid up or down, as desired. When the lever-plate m is released, the spring 2' expands, forcing the lever-plate m and the plate h in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
One especial advantage of the construction shown is that the movable jaw can be pressed upward toward the stationary jaw at any time without operating the lever-plate m, the reason being that by pushing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw the lockingplate It will be disengaged and driven downward relative to the movable jaw, or perhaps it may more properly be said the movable jaw will be driven upward in relation to the locking-plate, thereby compressing the spring. On the other hand, if it is attempted to move the movable jaw away from the fixed jaw any such attempt only makes the lockingplate h bind tighter, and this plate It can only be released by operating the lever-plate m.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a wrench, the combination with a shank provided with a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw arranged to slide on said shank, a locking-plate within said movable jaw arranged to bear at one end against said shank and at the other end againstsaid movable jaw, a link connected with said locking-plate, a lever outside of said movable jaw connected with said link, and a spring for holding said justable connection between said lever and looking-plate in its locked position, substansaid link, and a spring for holding said locktially as described. ing-plate in its locked position, substantially 2. In a wrench, the combination with a as described. 15 5 shank provided with a fixed jaw, of a mov- In testimony whereof I affix my signature able jaw arranged to slide on said shank, a in presence of two witnesses.
