Be it known that I, LOUIS MENDEL, of the city of Albany, State of New York; have invented an Apparatus to be attached to Watches to secure them from being suddenly withdrawn from the pockets in which they are worn 'by pickpockets; and I declare the following specification, with the drawings forming part thereof, .to

be a full and complete description of my invention.

Figure 1 represents an ordinary spring hook on an enlarged scale.

Figures 2 and 3 represent two forms of my apparatus on an enlarged scale. Figure 4, the apparatus attached to a watch of the ordinary size. Similar letters denote the same parts of thp apparatus.

My invention consists in applying to a spring hook, as represented in fig. 1, a projecting point either as a prolongation of the hook part a into a projecting point, b, as shown in fig. 2, or by a pin projecting from the lower or extreme end of spring a, as shown in fig. 3., or by a similar pin aflixed to back of thehook, at d, as" shown by the dotted lines in fig. 1. The hook is to be attached to the watch-chain by its upper loop, and by its spring hook to the watch, as shown in fig. 4. i V

I Th'eefl'ectcf this arrangement is sucli that at any attempt to draw suddenly the watch from its pocket by the chain the book 6 will cat'chinto the material of the pocket, and the watch cannot be drawn out without the hook tearing its way through the pocket and the materialof the garment containing. the pocket, thus preventing a sudden or unfelt theft of the watch. When the wearer of the watch desires to take it out, by putting his thumb and finger upon or along the hook it will be kept from contact with the pocket, and consequently can be removed without any obstruction. i

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- p A. projecting point or pin applied to a watch-chain as a safety attachment, in the manner described and for the purposes herein set forth.
