Description
@with tsts sttnt @ffite' EDWARD J. LEYBURN, OF LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 68,630, dated September 10, 1867.
IMPnovnD GU'PPING INSTRUMENT.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN: f
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. LEYBURN, of Lexington, in the county of Rockbridge, and State of Virginia,
have invented a new and improved Gupping-Glass; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, y
andexact description thereof, reference being had Vto the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whieli Figure 1 is an external view of the improved clipping-glass.
Figure 2 is adiametrieal section of the same.
Similar lettes of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relatesv to an improvement in cupping-glasses, which are designed for producing counterirritation of the skin without scarication or hlood-letting It consists inthe application to a capping-glass, of
a. suitable form, of a spurred or serrated and perforated disk, for the purpose of irritating the skin and proi ducing soreness without the previous use of scarifying instruments, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention I will describe its construction and' operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a hemispherical' glass, having a. bulb formed on it, as shown at a in iig. 2; and B represents an India-rubber globe or ball, which is applied tightly to the bulb a of the glass,
cup` A, and used for erhausting air from the latter when ap'plied'to some part of the body. The cu'pis provided', inside, with an annular shoulder, b, which may be'formed Vin the glass or other material of which the 'cup is made, or which may be an annular rin'g. suitablycemented to-the cup, as shown Vin the drawings. Within this` cup A, a disk of wood, is applied, which is held in place against the shoulder b by means of small blocks, c,
0f India rubber, or by any other suitable. means which will admit of the removal of said disk at pleasure.` Suicient spalie should be left between th'e circumference of the disk dnd its shoulder to allow of the passage l of air, or, if desirable, the disk may be perforated for this purpose. Through the centre of the disk C a screw,` D, is tapped, having secured upon its outer end a thin disk, E, of steel or'other suitable metal, whichis perforated f in such manner as to leave burs or sharp spurs or edges projecting from itsbottom surface, as shown in iig. 2.
This perforated disk is held in a plane parallel to the bottom of the cup A and disk C, and it can be adjusted and set nearer to or further from the bottom edge of said cup as circumstancesimayrcquire. If desirable the burs upon the bottom of the perforated disk may be made sufficiently acute to penetrate the skin and thusf 'serve as seariiers for drawing blood, but, as my improved cupping-glass is 'designed for dry clipping, .I shall s i not leave such burs sharp enough to scarify the skin. By having' thc perforated disk and the holder thereof` i removable, as described, the glassmay be Vused. for drawing blood after scarfication.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The application to a clipping-glass of a. spurred disk, E, substantially as described 2. The use of an adjustable device for irritating the skin,'in combination with a cupping-glass, substantially as described.
3. An irritator, E, constructed substantially as described, `and adapted for use in a eupping-glass, substan- 5 tially as described.
EDWARD J. LEYB'URN.
