CONVERTIBLE BROOCH AND PENDANT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,197, dated November 5, 1901- Application filed June 15, 1901. Serial No. 64,623. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AOHILL BIPPART, a citizen of the United States, residing at 915 South Sixteenth street, Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Brooches and Pendants, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.

The object of the present invention is to furnish an improved means of attaching a pin-tongue detachably to a pendant, so that the same may be usedat pleasure as a brooch.

The present invention furnishes a means of connecting a pin-tongue with a pendant in such a manner that it can be instantly attached to or removed from the pendant, and the owner is thus enabled without any delay or inconvenience to use the article at pleasure in either capacity.

In the present invention the pin-tongue is provided with a frame having a hinge at one end and a catch at the other end for the pintongue, and lugs adjacent to such hinge and catch to secure the frame to the pendant by entering sockets upon the latter, so that the hinge and catch may be held firmly when in use, and thus prevent the pin from any displacement which would cause the loss of the article. Intermediate to the lugs the pintongue frame is provided with means for securing it detachably to the pendant, and the pendant at such point of attachment is preferably formed with an ear against which the middle of the frame abuts, so as to hold the lugs firmly in their sockets. By forming the ear as a loop or'staple a spring-latch upon the middle of the pin-tongue frame may serve to automatically engage the ear, and thus hold the frame and the pintongue securely to the pendant. The retraction of the springcatch from the ear releases the middle of the frame, so that lifting it from the ear instantly releases the lugs upon the frame from the sockets upon the pendant, so that the frame and pin-tongue are wholly detached.

It is common to furnish a pendant with a ring at the top through which a chain or necklace can be passed, or a snap-hook engaged to secure the pendant to a chain, and in the present invention such ring is preferably hingedto the back of the pendant near the top and provided with a swivel, so that it can be turned to lie fiat against the rear side of the pendant when used as a brooch or projected outwardly at right angles to the edge of the pendant when suspended upon a chain. Such swivel-ring and the ear for holding the pin-tongue frame are arranged opposite to one anotherat the middle of the pendant near the top and bottom.

One form of the invention is shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the rear side of the pendant with the ring turned outwardly and a portion of a chain or necklace passed through the same. Fig. 2 shows the pin-tongue and its frame in plan view, and Fig. 3 an edge view of the same. Fig. 4: shows the pendant with the pin-tongue attached thereto to convert the same into a brooch. Fig. 5 is an edge View of the pendant with one of the sockets in section, and Fig. 6 is an edge view of the article provided with the pin-tongue frame for use as a brooch. Fig. 7 is an end view of the pin-tongue frame.

I) designates the ring at the top of the pendant, which is shown connected by a swivel c with a hinge (1, so that it can be turned inward, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, flat upon the back of the pendant or turned outward and set edgewise to receive a chain, {as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.

The pendant is provided with a transverse ear e adjacent to the hinge cl, and with sockets f at the opposite edges of the pendant. The pin-tongue frame g is shown with hinge h and catch 4. for the tongue j, and is shown of semi-elliptical or crescent shape, so that it may lie upon the back of the open center pendant and be concealed by the upper margin of the same. The frame has lugs 7c adja cent to the hinge 7t and catch 2', which lugs are adapted to enter the sockets f, and with a spring-latch Z, which is adapted to engage the ear e. The latch or bolt Z is shown fitted to the usual spring-box n. The ear is so disposed as to stand at the outer edge of the frame when the latter is fitted to the sockets f and pressed upon the back of the pendant,

and the ear thus prevents the retraction of the lugs 76 from their sockets.

The catch is provided with a thumb-piece m, which permits its retraction by the fingernail, and theend of the latch, as shown in Fig. 7, is slanted to slip over the ear automatically when the frame is pressed toward the back of the pendant. With such construction the contact of the ear with the box 77. holds the lugs firmly in the sockets f, and thus engages the pin-tongue with the pendant at the points Where the tongue conveys the greatest strain to the frame. Heretofore a detachable frame carrying a pin-tongue has been Secured upon the back of the pendant by a thumb-screw applied to the middle of the frame, in which construction the strain at the ends of the frame tends to bend the frame and to break the same at the point where the screw is inserted. In the present construction the pin-tongue frame is engaged to the back of the pendant adjacent to the hinge h and catch "6, so that the strain upon these points is resisted directly by the socketsfand no strain whatever is conveyed to the means (as the spring-latch m) which is employed to secure the frame upon the pendant. Other means may therefore be employed instead of the catch m with equal propriety, as such means does not resist the strain of the pin-tongue and is therefore immaterial in the present invention.

Where the frame of the pin-tongue is curved to correspond with the curve of the pendantframe, it is obvious that means of attachment applied merely to the middle of the pin-tongue frame would hold the ends of the frame (which are provided with the hinge h and catch t') very inadequately, and I have therefore made special claim not only to a pin-tongue frame having the same curve as the frame of the pendant, but also to a curved pin-tongue frame having means at its ends to engage it with the frame of the pendant, so that the hinge and catch of the tongue may be securely held to the pendant. As pendants are often made of great value this is of very considerable importance.

Haviug thus set forth the nature of the invention, what is claimed herein is- 1. The combination, with a pendant, of a pin-tongue having a frame provided with hinge and catch for such pin-tongue, lugs upon the frame adjacent to such hinge and catch, means upon the pendant to engage such lugs, and means intermediate to the lugs for locking the frame to the pendant, by which the frame when secured to the pendant is held firmly at the hinge and catch of the tongue.

2. The combination, with a pendant having an eye at one side, of a pin-tongue having aframe provided with hinge and catch for such pin-tongue, lugs upon the frame adjacent to such hinge and catch, sockets at opposite sides of the pendant to engage such lugs, an ear upon the pendant to engage the frame intermediate to the lugs and hold them in the sockets, and means adjacent to such ear for securing the frame to the pendant.

3. The combination, with a pendant having a swivel-ring hinged near the top to turn outward or inward,an ear opposite to such hinged ring, and sockets at opposite sides of the pendant as set forth, of a pin-tongue having a frame with hinge and catch for the tongue, and lugs adjacent to such hinge and catch to engage the sockets, and a spring-latch upon the frame to engage the ear opposite to the swivel-ring.

4. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for pendants to provide the same with a tongue, consisting of apin-tongue having a frame with hinge and catch for the tongue, lugs adjacent to such hinge and catch to engage the pendant, and a spring-latch upon the frame intermediate to such lugs to lock the frame to the pendant.

5. The combination, with a pendant having an open center, of a pin-tongue having a frame of the same curve as the frame of the pendant to be concealed behind the back of the same, and having a hinge and catch for such pin-tongue, and means upon the frame and pendant for securingthe frame and pendant detachably together.

6. The combination, with apendant having an open center, of a pin-tongue having a frame of the same curve as the frame of the pendant to be concealed behind the back of the same, and havinga hinge and catch for such pin-tongue, means at the ends of the frame for engaging it with the pendant, and means upon the frame for locking it to the pendant detachably, as and for the purpose set forth.
