JOSEPH ARTHUR COTE, OF EAST HARDWICK, VERMONT.
LAP-ROBE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,974, dated November 5, 1901.
Application filed April 1, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ARTHUR Corn, a citizen of the United States, residing at East l-Iardwick, in the county of Caledonia and Stateof Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap-Robe Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention aims to provide a simple and effective contrivance or clip primarily intended for holding a robe about a person when out sleighing or driving and which is adapted for a variety of uses where a clip for holding an article or aseries of objects in firm and secure position is required.
The clip or holder is constructed with a view not to injure the robe or covering and to admit of its quick application and ready detachment and when in service to prevent slipping or displacement of the robe.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clip or holder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of a jaw of one of the pivoted members. Fig. 4 is a de tail view of the elastic block or yielding piece fitted to a jaw.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The clip is composed of pivoted members 1 and 2, having an end of each widened to form a jaw 3. The members are pivoted intermediate of their ends in such a manner that a compression of the rear ends of the members will effect a corresponding opening Serial No. 53,925. (No model.)
or separation of the jaws. The rear end portions of the members constitute handles and are oppositely curved and are made hollow, the hollow sides facing inward and serving to retain in place spring 4, approximately U-shaped, by means of which the jaws 3 are forced together and caused to grip the robe or article placed therebetween. One of the members, as 2, is extended and bent to provide a loop 5, which is preferably in the plane of the members. The terminal of the rear end portion, bent to provide the loop 5, serves to confine one member of the spring t between itself and the extremity of the handle proper, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2. The loop 5 is designed to receive a tape, strap, or web, by means of which the clip or holder is secured either to the person, the vehicle, or other part to which it may be desired to attach the device. Usually a pair of clips or holders are connected bya tape or strap, which is looped into the part 5 of each, as will be readily comprehended.
The jaws 3 of the members are similarly formed and are recessed in their inner sides or faces, the side walls of the recesses being undercut, so as to retain in place the blocks or pieces 6, of rubber, leather, felt, or other material, to prevent injury to the robe or covering gripped between the jaws of the clip. The opposing faces of the blocks or strips 6 are roughened, toothed, or otherwise formed, so as to prevent slipping of the article gripped between the jaws when the clip or holder is in service. These parts 6 can be readily replaced when worn.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l 1. In a device of the character described, pivoted members provided at one end with gripping-jaws, and one of the members having an end portion bent to provide a loop, and a spring interposed between the members and held in place by the part forming the aforesaid loop, substantially as set forth. 5
2. A clip or holder, substantially as set forth, comprising pivoted members provided at one end with jaws having their faces covered with rubber or analogous yielding material, the opposite end portions of the members being curved and having their inner faces or I the extension forming the aforementioned sides hollow and one of the members having loop, substantially as set forth. 1o
an end portion extended and bent to provide In testimony whereof I affix my signature a loop, and a spring of approximately U form in presence of two Witnesses.
having its members fitted into the hollow J. ARTHUR COTE. [L. s.] sides of the handles of the clip, and one of Witnesses: V the members of the spring being confined be- JOHN B. LIVINGSTON,
tween a handle of the clip and a terminal of J. H. PEAR.
