SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,400, dated October 29, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARCHIE O. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los-Angeles, State of Cali fornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Punching Attachments for- Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to punching devices for perforating order-blanks, sales-slips, and other papers that it is desired to bind together temporarily or to place on files; and the object thereof is to provide a simple punching device which can be easily attached to a printing-press and will punch holes in the side or end of an order-blank, sales-slip, or other paper and will retain in a magazine the waste disks punched from the sheet at the same time that such sheet is being printed, and thereby save the time and expense of separately punching the same. I accomplish this object by the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the magazine for holding the punched waste disks ofpaper on which is mounted the female die. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the male die 0 or punch and paper-retracting spring. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 5 is an isometic view of the upper portion of a press with my punching device attached thereto.
In the drawings, A is the body of the maga- 3 5 zine, on which rests perforated plate B, to retain within the magazine the punched waste disks of paper which are forced through the holes '13. Resting on plate B is cover 0, having guiding slot 0', in which is slidably 40 mounted nut D, in which is screwed female die E to clamp nut D to cover C, and thereby render the position of die E stationary.
I have illustrated my device with two dies E, as it is usual to have only two holes punched in a sheet of paper 5 but there may be as many dies used as are desired. Die E is placed so that the hole therethrough will register with a hole in plate B, that the waste disks may be deposited in the magazine, and the holes B are spaced to enable the adjustment of dies E to fit the usual distance of the holes in the sales-slips or other papers. I provide a washer II to give die E a better hold on cover 0. If when dies E are adjusted to openings therethrough will not register with holes in plate B, the plate must be removed and a piece of heavy paper with two holes punched thereinin register with the holes in the dies substituted therefor. This is easily 6o accomplished by taking out screw F, which holds the parts together, and removing plate B and putting in the paper. One end of body A is closed by door G, through which the waste disks are removed when necessary. The magazine is placed in the type form or chase N on press 0 in such position that dies E will come at the place where it is desired to have the holes punched in the sheets as they are printed, and occupies the space of 7a a piece of furniture, being so constructed that dies E will lie below the face of the type and will not contact with the'inking-rollers. Punch I is affixed to a suitable base-plate J,
to which is attached paper-retracting spring K, having aperture L, through which punch I passes when a sheet of paper is punched. Base-plate J is suitably attached to one of the tympan-sheets M. I prefer to attach it sheet will aid in holding it in place and will keep the paper being punched and printed from contacting with the punch until such time as it is desired to have the holes punched therein.
My device is attached to the press as follows: Dies E being adjusted to the required distance,the magazine is secured in the proper position in the form. plate J is covered with glue or some other 0 sticky substance, and punches I are placed in dies E and the form is caused to bring the base-plate J so that the bottom thereof will contact with the tympan-sheet to which it is desired to fasten it. The glue will-hold the 95 base-plate .I fast to the tympan-sheet, and thus givethe correct position for the punches,
which are then securely fastened to the tymcpuuch holes the required distance apartthe 55 to the second one from the top, as the top Thebottom of the basepan-sheet by sealin g-wax or any other quicklyadhering substance, and the top tympan-sheet is then put on, which completes the attachment of the device to the press. The sheets being printed are placed on the top tympansheet in such position that when the form is brought forward and prints the sheet the same movement causes the punching of the desired holes therein, paper-retracting spring K pushingthesheetoff punch I, and the sheet is ready for use. It will be observed that with my device the punched waste disks are securely held in the magazine and are not permitted to get on the type or on the inkrollers or inking-plates, but are kept Where they can do no harm. When the magazine becomes too 'full of disks, door G, which is at the bottom, is opened, and the disks are removed. I have made one side of the magazine sloping, so that the disks will not pack.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A punching attachment for printingpresses, comprising a magazine to hold the waste-paper disks, having perforations in the top thereof, adapted to be fastened in the chase of such press as a piece of furniture;
[SQSAGO female dies slidably mounted on said magazine; a base-plate adapted to be fastened to a tympan-sheet on such press; a paper-retracting spring, having a hole in the free end thereof, affixed to said base plate; and a punch affixed to said base-plate, adapted to pass through the hole in said spring.
2. In a punching attachment for printingpresses, a magazine having a perforated top, adapted to be secured in the chase of such press, and to receive and retain the Wastepaper disks; female dies slidably mounted on said magazine in combination With a punching mechanism, adapted to be fastened to a tympan sheet on said press, comprising a base-plate; a paper-retracting spring, and a punch affixed to said plate, said punch being adapted to pass into the female dies on the magazine when the chase and tympan-sheet are brought together.
