PERFGRATING ATTACHMENT FOR JOB-PRESSES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, THOMAS A. SULLIVAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at able, device for use with ordinary job presses, of the swinging platen type, for perforating papers during the operation of printing the same; my said device being of such a novel construction that it may be quickly attached to such presses without the aid of tools other than an ordinary screw driver or wrench, and which may be adjusted to punch a plurality of holes at any desired distances apart within the range of the device.
The annexed drawings illustrate my said invention clearly, Figure 1 being a perspective view of the ink-disk, platen, and bed of a job press having my present improvement attached to the said platen. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the punch arm and of the die plate. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the die-blocks and F 4 is a similar view of one of the punch blocks.
In these drawings the numeral 20 indicates the ink table of a job printing press, 21 the impression bed and 22 the platen which is hinged at 23; said platen having hinged thereto the customary binders 24 and 25 for clamping the paperblanket to the platen.
Briefly described my present improvement comprises a counter-weighted arm which is hinged to the rear edge portion of the platen, and has adjustably mounted thereon one or more blocks with punches that are adapted to co-act with dies that are fixedly attached to thesaid platen, the arrangement of parts being such that the punches and dies are in engagement during the brief period of impression and, when the platen drops, after said impression, the

Referring again specifically to the drawings, the numeral 26 denotes the punch arm or bar, the same being pivotally secured to one end of bar 33, and formed with a weight 28 at its lower end portion. The block 27 is adapted to be slipped over the rear edge portion of the platen and then to be clamped in its operative position by the closing down of the binder 25 as will be understood by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings. Slidably mounted upon the bar 26 are blocks 29 which may be secured to said bar by screws 80 and each of which blocks carries a punch 31.
Attached to the outer edge portion of the platen 22 and held in place by the closing down of the blanket binder 2%, is a plate 32 to which is secured a flat bar 33 which lies on the platen or blanket and has adjustably mounted thereon plates 34, each of said plates being bored to provide a die opening which will receive one of the described punches 81.
Assuming that there is a press fitted with my described perforating attachment and that the punches and dies have been properly adjusted so that each punch is in register with its particular die :the sheet to be printed and perforated is laid on the platen and suitably located by means of the customary guide-pins. When the platen swings forward for an impression, the dies receive the punches, and the sheet located therebetween is perforated at the instant that said sheet received the imprint from the printing form. When the platen drops back to its open position, the weight 28 in seeking to maintain the punch bar 26 in a vertical position, separates the punches from the dies, thus leaving the perforated sheet free to be removed from the press.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with a swinging-platen printing press, a perforating attachment 2.
