CARD- FILE.
SEESKFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent 684,899, dated October 22, 1.901.
. Application filed January 19, 1900. Serial No. 2,062. (No model) 7 i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ZIMMERLI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe, in the State of New York, have invented an Improved Card.- File, of which, the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of card-files,whereby the same are simplified and cheapened.
My improvements are fully described and illustrated in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, the novel features thereof being specified in the claims annexed to the said specification.
In the accompanying drawings, representing my improved card-file, Figure 1 is a plan View. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a trans verse section. Fig. 5 represents one of the cards detached. Fig. 6 is a transverse section through the follower. Fig. 7 represents a portion of the interior of the casing. Fig. 8 is a partial rear View of the follower. Fig. 9 is an inverted view of the follower. Fig. 10 is a horizontal section of the follower on the line 10 10, Fig. 6. Fig. 11 is a perspective View of the retaining-strap.
In the accompanying drawings, A A represent the side frames, and B and O the front and inner end of a tray of any suitable shape or dimensions. On the bottom D of this tray I fasten a strip of wood E, running lengthwise, and on this strip I attach the metallic bar F, notched on one edge, as shown at'G, and provided with diagonal slots H, engaging screws I, the arrangement being such that when the bar is drawn outward it shifts laterally, as indicated by the full and dotted lines in Fig. 1. At its outer end the bar F is pro- Vided with a suitable hook or handpiece J. At its inner end the baris turned up, as indicated at K, and a spring L, attached to the end 0, bears against the lug K and draws the bar inward constantly. Provision is made for holding the bar in its outward position in any suitable way, such as by thenotch K in one edge, which engages at L, Fig. 1, with the end of a slot in the plate N, attached to the front. This plate may also serve as a label-holder.
The strip E is beveled on one sideand recessed on the other, as indicated in the sectional view at O, Fig. 4. Thecards P are provided with notches of substantially the form shown at Q, Fig. 5. When it is desired to insert or remove one or more of the cards,
the bar F is drawn outward, thereby shifting it laterally and practically narrowing the width of the parts which engage-in the notches Q and hold the cards in place. l
The follower R is arrangedso that it may be shifted lengthwise'of the drawer to adjust it to any number of cards which may be placed on file. It is provided with a recess in its lower side, which fits over the strip and bar, as shown in Fig. 6, and it is provided with a plate S, Fig. 8, which engages with the notches G in the bar. The follower may be shifted forward without operating the bar;
but in order to move it backward the bar is retracted laterally, thus disengaging the teeth G from the plate S.
The recess inthe lower side of the follower is provided with the spring T, Figs. 6, 9, and 10, which engages in the longitudinal groove 0 in the side of the strip E and prevents the follower from being detached therefrom, except by a lateral movement, compressing the spring when the notched bar is in its retracted position. This spring may be of any suitable shape or construction. As shown it consists of a flattened loop, with the end secured in a transverse slot in the follower. ,In order to prevent the drawer from being pulled out of its casing, I apply on one or both sides the inward, as indicated at Y, Figs. 2 and 11,.
and a notch Z is out in the upper edge of the bent portion, in which the plate V engages.
-When it is desired to remove the drawer," it
is lifted upward after being drawn out, when the lugs Y pass downward through the notches X. A plate A, Figs. 1 and 7, attached to the casing, holds the strap in the groove, audit is provided with a spring-tongue 13, which engages in the notch C, Fig. 1, at the inner end of the strap and prevents it from being drawn out of the groove lengthwise. D is an angular piece between the front and the cards, designed to facilitate the handling of the latter.
I claim- 1. The herein-described card-locking device for card-files, consisting of the beveled strip and the laterally and longitudinally movable notched bar, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with a series of cards having expanded notches, of a strip beveled on one side and grooved lengthwise on the other adapted to be passed through said expanded notches, and the laterally and longitudinally movable notched bar, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination with a series of cards having expanded notches,of the beveled strip,
seems having expanded notches,of the beveled strip, and the laterally movable lockin g bar attached thereto and provided with the diagonal slots, as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination with a series of cards having expanded notches, of the beveled strip, the laterally-movable locking-bar attached to the strip by pins passing through diagonal slots, and the spring for moving the barlengthwise, as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The combination with a series of cards having expanded notches, ofthe beveled strip, the laterally-movable locking-bar, attached to the strip by pins passing through diagonal slots, the spring for moving the bar lengthwise, and a suitable catch for holding the bar in its retracted position, as and for the purposes set forth.
7. The combination, in a card-file, of the strip beveled on one side and grooved lengthwise on the other, and the follower having a notch fitting the strip, and provided with a spring engaging in the groove, as and for the purposes set forth.
