IMPROVEMENT IN ESCAPE-VALVE HOSEGOUPLING.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. ALLEN, of Providence, in the county of Providencejand State of Rhode Island, have'invented a new-and improved Hose-Coupling; and'I do hereby declare that the following is afull,-
clear, and ex'act description thereof, which will enable those skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side view partly in section of my.improvedhose-coupling. A
Figure 2. is a transverse sectional view of the same. the plane of section being indicated by the line :v te, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference-indicate corresponding parts.
Thisiinvention relates .to a new device. by which the water canbe easily discharged from hose,`and by which firemen will be better ena-bled to carry such emptied hose upladders or along the ground or oors. The invention consists in the use of a. perforated sleeve, which is fitted aronnd'the perforated cylindrical portion of a hosecoupling in such a manner that the holes in the coupling can be completely closed by the said sleeve, when -the hose can be used in the ordinary manner; but when it is desired to quieklyinterrupt the flowing of the water in thchose without stopping the working of the engine the holes in the coupling can be at once opened by a.
Short turn of the sleeve. The upper end of the'hose will then at once be completely emptied; thereby the said hose will be lightened and can be carried with facility to any desired place. By another short turn of the sleeve the water can be conducted into the hose again when the no'zzle'is brought tothe required place and position.
A represents the cylindrical portion of Aa metallic coupling of suitable construction. Its outside should be made slightly conical, tapering toward the free end of the cylinder. B is the opposite (female) portion of the coupling, which is screwed or otherwise secured to the cylinder The cylinder A is perforated by four, more or less, holes. C is a sleeve litting well around the cylinder, being nia-de somewhat conical inside in accordance` with the shape of the'cylinder. The sleeve has holes-which correspond to those in the cylinder. It is shorter than the cylinder, the thinner end of which is provided with a serew-thread,.upon which two nuts a bare arranged, by which the sleeve can 4be forced up toward the wider 'end of the cylinder to lmake a. tight tit, It
will. be easily understood that by means of-a wrench or otherwise the sleeve can be turn'cd so as to close the` holes in the cylinder A', or so asto open the same, the latter position heilig shown in the drawings. When the holes are thus opened the water will be prevented from flowing np to the nozzle, and' will escape through the holes. When the holes are closed the hose will operate in the ordinary manner.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by vllictters Patent- 1. So arranging n hose-coupling that the flow of water towarilthe nozzle can be instantly stopped or resumed without interrupting the working of the engine, substantially :is and for the purpose herein shown and described. 2. The perforated sleeve C, ia combination with the perforated cylinderA and nuts-a and b, all made and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described. i
