Description
finned gister i Q) Y @anni @finta Nw i f JAMES BARRWS, OF HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS.
` Leners Patent No. 87,321, Acamz March 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINKLERS FOR 'WIZA'JERING-:IF'OTS4 The Schedule referred to in 'these' Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom, it mafy concern Be it known that I, JAMEs BARRoWs, of Hyde Park,
inthe county of Norfolk, and State of' Massachusetts,
have invented certain Improvements in Sprinklers for Watering-Pots, &c.,of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which n Figure I 1s a perspective view of my improvement. Figure 2 is a central section, representing the same in place upon the spout of a watering-pot. Figure 3, my improvement detached.
The spout of a watering-pot, of the ordinary con,
struction, is provided with a stationary perforated rose',l or nozzle, through which the water passes in jets upon the ground, plant, or other article or `place to be sprinkled. y
L Owing to extraneous matter contained in the water, the perforations become closed, and the water ceases to How until the obstruction is'removed, which operation is tedious, andinconvenient towperform.
To remedy the'abovelmentioned dicultyisthe object of -my invention, which consists in a removable perforated cap, either reversible or not, which may be readily screwed, or otherwise secured upon the en-` larged. end of the spout of the watering-pot, or upon' ths enlarged end of a short spout, made'independently of the spout of thewatering-pot, by which constructio'n, whenY the perforated' cap becomes clogged, it is only necessary to remove and clean it, or reverse it, when it may be quickly returned to its place, the water forcing its way through the perforations when the cap is reversed, and readily removing the obstructions previously collected.
To enable othersskilled'in the art to understand anduse my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawingsv A represents a conical tube, to be placed upon the end of the spout of a watering-pot, the diameter of this tube being contracted at a, beyond which point it enlarges rapidlyV to the point b, where a slight shoulder is formed on its outer rim, which is provided with a screw-thread. c, over which tsa corresponding thread,
c,.cut within the interior of a circular band, or fiat ring, B, across the middle of the inside of which extends a plate, O, provided with a series of per'orations,Y
(1,;through which the water may pass in jets when the conical tube is fitted in place.
vvThe interior of the end of the circular band B, opposite that bearing the screw-thread c', is also provided with a similar screw`thread, e, in order that when the" perforations d 'become clogged by'obstructionscollecting on the inner face ofthe plate C, the band may be unscrewed, and its position reversed, when it can be ,readily returned to its place, the`force of the water Within the watering-pot being suiicient to instantly wash away'the obstruction.
Instead of' placing the perforated plate C at or near the centre ofthe band B, so as to admit of its reversibility, the plate may cover the end of the bandin which case the latter will not be reversible, and may be cleaned vby removing andwashing away the obstructions; but I prefer the construction rstdescribed.
It is evident that the conical tube A maybe dispensed with, and my removable and reversible, band, B, be applied directly to the enlarged end ofthe spout of the watering-pot; and it may also be applied to a syringe or sprinkler for clothes, orother purposes, as the` feature of its reversibility renders it particularly useful when so employed. .y l
Instead of screwing the band B upon theenlargement ofthe conical tube A, the screw-threads may be dispensed with, and the parts made to fit snugly over each other, to prevent leakage, without departing from the spirit of my inventioni What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
The within-described removable and reversible perforatedcap for watering-pots, Ste., operating substan tially as and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES BARRO-ws. Witnesses N. W. STEARNS, L; E. BATCHELLER.
