Description

lll/111117] Ny PETERS. PHOTO-L THOGRAPHER WASHINGTON titled 'tatet ge-teni dlt-)Wire AARONI HARRIS, OF' LAPORTEfOALIFOIRNIA.
Letters- Patent No. 98,257, dated December 28, 1869.
The Schedule-referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON HARRIS, of Laporte, county of Plumas, and State of California, have invented a new and improved Hydraulic Nozzle and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tol the accompanying drawings, and letters marked thereon.
The principle objectof my invention is to provide a nozzle for hydraulic mining, where it becomes necessary to throw'streams of water ot' various sizes, and of greater or lesser. force, against the bank of earth to be watered, although lin y device may be employed on fire-engines.
, My invention consistsin forming a transverse slot near the end of the nozzle, in which a gate is placed, having a circular opening, in which diieren t-sized iing's are placed, to increase or decrease the volume of the l stream, without shutting ofi the 'water at the fountain'head.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of my nozzle,
Figure 2 is a plan, with adjustable spray-ring, for
nre-engine hose.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation.
Figure 4, a plan of gate.
The remaining figures are different views of rings.
To enable others skilled inthe art to makean'd use my invention, I Will proceed to fully describe its con-l structionv and operation.
I construct my nozzle in the form of'a cylinder,'with slightly daring end, for the attachment of the hose The end of the nozzle is provided with a'flange, A, through which 1 make a transverse slot,"B, for the gate C.
' The gate is attached to an arm or lever, D, by a pin, and theend of the arm works upon a pin in a lug cast to the nozzle, so that it may be lifted from the nozzle, for the introduction ot' t-he different-sized rings E E, and perforated disk @spray-ring, E', to reduce or increase the size or volume ot' the ,stream of water, or send ,it in form of spray into a burning building.
; The outer circumference of the rings are uniform in l size, but are provided with a different-sized bore, and
set in the recess or seat of the gate, breasting the course of the stream, in which'postion it is held,Wit-h the gate against a shoulder, near the end of the nozzle, by ascrew-coupling, F. l The construction of the gate and slot is such, that by unscrewing the coupling and raising the lever', the gate and ring are easily lifted from the nozzle, for a ling having a larger or smaller bore, and that without shutting oli' the stream of water passing through the hose, however great iii-force or velocity; and no water will pass out through the slot, as the velocity is so great thatthe suction or drawinginof the air will entirely prevent the escape of water through the openlng.
In the common hydraulic nozzle, 'different sizes of pipe'were nsedtorednce or increase the size of the stream, which rendered it necessary, in order to make the change, to shut cft the fountain-head, which oftentimes is approached through deep snow, and at the topv of a high bluff, and requiring the time o f one man an hour or more to accomplish it. Consequently, much greater risks were run by the hydraulic-miner in ap. proaching near the bank to cut it down, without changing thesize of the stream.
Many frightful accidents and deaths have occurred in this manner; but by my device the diameter of the stream may be changed almost instantly, and a smaller stream thrown against the bank ofearth, at a greater distance and with greater force, without stopping the ,stream'and approaching too near to danger.
Having thus describedmy invention, .What `I claim, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is-
1. The transverse slot B, in the nozzle, through which the gate is raised o r 1owered,lfor adjusting the rings, without stopping the flowv of water through the nozzle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The adjustable gate C, provided with a ring-seat, O', rings E E, and spray-ring E', which are held, when in position, against the shoulder of the nozzle, bythe screw-coupling F, as described;
Iu testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my handand seal.
, AARON HARRIS. [L s] Witnesses:
