HARRY F. ANAWALT, OF HOMESTEAD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO FRANK A. NAUGI-ITON, OF SAME PLACE.
TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part oflLetters Patent No. 684,663, dated October 15, 1901.
Application filed July 25,1991. Serial No. 651N705. (N0 1121 .61
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. ANAWAL'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tool-handles for use in b'ricklayers picks, hammers, or other tools.
One object of the same is to construct a handle which can be used in a number of tools and the necessity of carrying a handle for every tool avoided.
Another object is to make a handle which will be both simple and durable, of the minimum number of parts, and those not liable to injury.
The novel construction by which this is accomplished is fully described in this specification and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part there of, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a tool with my handle therein. Fig, 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail fragment of the tool. Fig. 4 consists of details of the head and wedges.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a sleeve, which is choke-bored at 2 to accommodate a wooden handle 3. Formed integral with the sleeve 2 is ahead 4,coned on the sides at 5 to fitaconical or flaring eye 6 in a tool 7. Square shoulders S furnish a firm support for the tool 7. To permit the readyinsertion of the coned head into the eye 6, the head is transversely slotted at 9 in two planes at right angles to each other and rounded off at 10. Means for look ing the handle against withdrawal is provided in the shape of a beveled key 11, which fits a transverse aperture 12 in the head and engages a transverse groove 13 in the tool '7. By this arrangement the handle is securely held against turning in the eye 6 or Withdrawal therefrom. To render possible the wedging of the handle 3, the head 4: is longitudinally bored at 14 to permit the insertion of a round tapering wedge 15 in a longitudinal aperture 16 in the end of the handle 3.
To insert my handle in a tool, the key 11 is removed and the rounded end 10 presented to the small end of the eye 6 and driven, which action will force the segments of the head 4. together and permit it to slip into place. The key 11 is then inserted in the aperture 12 anddriven home.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tool-handle comprising the combination of a sleeve having a rounded conical head formed integral therewith, said head being slotted transversely to adapt it to be contracted, and apertured transversely to accommodate a key, and a handle inserted in said sleeve, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a tool having a conical eye and a groove extending transversely said eye, a sleeve having a rounded conical head integral therewith, said head being transversely slotted to adapt it to be inserted in said eye and transversely apertured, and a beveled key fitting said aperture and engaging said groove in said tool, substantially as described.
3. A member of a handle comprising a sleeve, a conical head having shoulders thereon and rounded off on the corners, being transversely slotted, to enable it to be contracted to insert it into a conical eye, and transversely apertu red to accom modate a beveled key to secure it in said eye, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. H
HARRY F. ANAWALT. Witnesses:
