Be it known that I, THOMAS C. HOUK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arrowsmith, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the followingto be afull, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in gates, more especially for the passage of teams or persons mounted on horseback. It belongs generally to that class of gates employing hand-levers arranged or disposed at right angles to the closed position of the gate for its actuation in approaching or leaving the same. It is adapted to be readily opened and closed without dismounting, it the person desiring to eii'ect passage be seated in a vehicle or on horseback. It provides for the unlatching and latching of the gate when opened and closed from acommon point and at one operation or simultaneously, respectively; also, for latching the gate in its open position. It promotes simplicity of construction and lessens cost of manufacture, the.
It consists of the various novel features of construction and the sundry combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims concluding the specification proper.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2is an end elevation with the open gate. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed perspective view disclosing more fully the rocking or trunnioned lever and adjunctive parts of the latch and gate actuating mechanism. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed view of the top hinge-plate or pivot, adapted to have connected thereto the gate truss or brace rod. Fig. 5 is a similar view of an approved construction of splicing attachment or coupling employed in connection with the gate-operating or hand-lever support. Fig; 6 is a detached broken view of the gatelatch, showing more fully its sectional character or structure. Fig. 7 is a detailed sectional view taken through the top hinge or pivot, the. In carrying out my invention I suitably plant or anchor in the ground the two usual upright posts 3 sand thejamb and hinge-post, and similarly anchored in the ground at right angles to the plane of arrangement of the aforesaid posts are two other posts or uprights 6 6 the purpose of which will be apparent presently. The gate 7 is preferably composed of longitudinal or horizontal rails or rods 7, strung or passed through vertical bars 7 preferably three, with their ends suitably secured or nutted in place. The bottom and top rods or rails have suitably secured or brazed thereto disks or washers 7 close up against the end bars to [ix the position of the parts. The gate structure is braced as against liability of sagging by a diagonal brace or truss rod 7, with its lower end preferably passed through the forward end bar of the gate and nutted, its upper end being suitably secured at the upper rearend of the gate, as presently seen. To the bot tom of the rear end bar of the gate is applied a pintle or pivot 8, with its upper end cast on a plate or disk 8, preferably screwed. to said.

To the hinge-post 4 is applied, near its lower end, a socket or eye 9 to receive said pintle or pivot 8, preferably comprising a tapered plate or arm 9, which may have a strengthening-rib upon its under side, with the socket proper in its upper surface at the free end and having its opposite end terminating in a flange 9", standing at right an-' gles to said plate or arm and secured or screwed to said post. The top of the rear end" bar of the gate has attached to it a plate 10, with one edge formed with a flange 10, fitted against one side of said bar, and havingan eye 10" to provide for effecting connection between the same and the truss or brace rod 7, indirectly securing said rod or brace to that end of the gate. The plate 10 has a boss or elevation upon its upper side, and from this boss or elevation projects a vertical pintle or pivot 10, passing through an aperture orhole of a plate or bracket 11, fastened or screwed to the top of the hinge-post 4. Said bracket extends sufficiently beyond one side of the hinge-post to permit of the arrangement of its pivot receiving hole in vertical alinement section, which is pivoted thereto at 17.

Said bracket also has upon its under side a boss opposed to the boss of the plate 10, one thus being adapted to turn upon the other and form a kind of turn-table, preventing any careening or wabbling of the gate as it is actuated, which would otherwise occur. Said bracket also has a like boss or shoulder 11 upon its upper surface around the pivot-receiving hole therein, the purpose of which will appear presently. A toothed sector or quadrant 12, standing at right angles to the plane of the gate and having its tapered upper end cast with a preferably tubular inverted- T-shaped lever 12, is pivoted or trunnioned between parallel preferably inverted -V- shaped supports 13, the pivoting pin or bolt 13 being inserted through holes in said supports at their apices and through the transverse portion or head of the lever 12. The supports 13 are secured to the upper surface of the bracket 11, having upstanding integral lugs 11, through which and the lower divergent ends of said supports are passed nutted and headed bolts. The teeth of the toothed sector or quad rant 12 are preferably arranged thereon laterally, and upon the upper end of the gate pivot or pintle 10, above the boss 11 of the bracket 11, is carried a toothed segment or rack 14,gea ring or meshing with the teeth of said sector,th us connecting thegate therewith. The connection between the pintle or pivot 10 and the toothed segment or rack 14: is such that the latter will be turned by the former as it is actuated, said pintle or pivot being angular in cross-section at that point and said segmentor rack having a corresponding opening or hole therethrough to receive the angular part of said pivot or pintle. Said pintle or pivot is provided above said angular portion with a screw-threaded terminal fitted with a nut 15, between which and the segment or rack 1% is interposed a washer 16. The
gate-latch 17 comprises two sections 17 17 articulated together, preferably, as shown, short parallel lugs or plates 17 being fixed or brazed to one end of one section and receiving between them one end of the other The longer latch-section 17 passes through a slot in the middle cross piece or bar of the gate and is also pivoted thereto, as at 1'7", while its forward projecting end is adapted to engage a keeper or catch, suitably secured to the gate-post or jamb 3. The shorter latchsection 17 is centrally hung or pivoted, as at 18, in a bracket or support 19, preferably composed of short parallel pieces orsections 19, having opposed recesses, forming a slot or passage therein through which passes said latch-section. Said bracket-sections 19 have also additional opposed recesses to receive and permit of the application or at tachment of said sections to rods or rails of the gate, said sections being clamped or held upon said rods or rails preferably by the binding action of the screw-bolt constituting the pivot 18 of said latch-section. From this is capable of being flexed as it is actuated from its rear end to effect its engagement with and disengagement from the keeper or catch. Said rear end of the latch extending a short distance beyond the rear end bar of the gate has a lateral stud or projection 20, Fig. 6, and the forward and rear ends of said latch pass through and are adapted to have the requisite movement in slots 21 21, provided in the corresponding end bars of the gate, respectively, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The lateral projection or stud 20 has attached to it one end of the latch-actuatingline or wire 22, preferably by passing the latter through a transverse passage or hole 20 therein and knotting one end of said line or wire. Said line or wire passes up through a hole or aperture 20" in the bracket 11, thence up through a hole or aperture in the under side of the transverse portion of the T-shaped lever 12, and finally through said lever, whence it is suitably connected with one of two crossing wires or lines 23 23, connected to and actuated bytwo hand or gate-operating levers 21 2t. The handlevers 24: 2t are pivoted centrally with relation to the respective points of attachment of the ends of the lines or wires 23 23 therewith to outer or upper ends of inclined or diagonally=disposed preferably sectional bars or supports 25 25. The bars or supports 25 25 have their principal or lower members or sections preferably crossing each other and mortised together and each suitably secured to both of the posts 6 6, against one of which the gate swings when opened. The upper members or sections 25 25 of said supports are preferably coupled or spliced uponfthe upper ends of the lower sections thereof, preferably as shown in Fig. 1, so as to bring the hand-levers 24 24, pivoted thereon, in alinement, or nearly so, with the gate-actuating lines or wires 23 25 to cause them to pull substantially in the plane of the movement of the gate and gate-latch-actuating lever 12. The coupling or splicing connection between said sections of the hand-lever supports may be effected, among other ways, by providing the upper member or section of each of said supports with an offset or shoulder 26, beveled or sloped upon the side presented away from the gate, with the slope extending clearto the lower end of said upper member to cause said end to taper in a direction toward the lower member and by providing said upper member or section with a clip 27. Said clip or splice is slipped laterally upon the lower end of said upper member or section, with the inner surface of its vertical wall secured or screwed to the beveled or sloping surface of the offset 20, and its projecting portion slipped upon and held to the upper end of the lower member, preferably by a screw-bolt and thumb-nut 28. With said members and coupling thus arranged or asconstruction it will be seen that the latch 17 ICC seinbled the upper member will be deflected laterally inward or toward the gate-operating lines or wires for the purpose aforesaid. The outer supplemental post 6 is also equipped with a keeper or catch 30, whereby when the gate is swung into an open position the latch is caused to engage the same, and thus hold the gate without the further attention of the operator in that direction. It is plain that in lieu of the toothed sector and segmental gear or rack, as described and shown, any
other equivalent form of intergeared devices may be used. In other words, either spurgear or beveled gear may be employed in this connection.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In gate-operating mechanism, a toothed sectorcarried by the gate, an intergeared sec tor supported by the hinge-post, a tubular lever attached to the second sector, a handlever connected to said tubular lever and means effecting connection between said hand-lever and the gate-latch, through said tubular lever-latch, substantially as set forth.
2. In gate-operating mechanism, a toothed sector carried by the gate, an intergeared sector supported by the hinge-post, a tubular lever attached to the second sector, a gate-latch with its actuating line or wire passed through said tubular lever, and a hand-actuated lever connected to said latch-operating line or wire, substantially as set forth.
3. In a gate-operating mechanism, intergeared sectors, one of said sectors being connected to the top gate hinge-pintle and the other sector having a T-shaped lever, a gatelatch having its actuating line or wire passed through said lever, and a hand-lever connected to said latch-actuating line or wire, substantially as set forth.
4. In gate operating mechanism, intergeared sectors, a plate secured to the top of the rear end bar of the gate and having a pintle or pivot carrying one of said sectors, a bracket forming a bearing for said pintle or pivot and secured to the hinge-post, a tubular lever attached to the other sector, and a hand-lever connected to said tubular lever,
and means extending through said tubular 1ever for actuating the gate-latch, substantially as set forth.
5. In gate operating mechanism, intergeared sectors, a plate secured upon the top of the rear end bar of the gate and having a flange with an eye or loop thereon, also a pintle or pivot on its upper surface carrying one of said sectors, a truss or brace rod connected to the gate at its bottom forward edge and to said eye or loop, a tubular lever connected to the other sector, a hand-actuated lever connected to said tubular lever, and means for effecting connection between the gate-latch and said hand-actuated lever, through said tubular lever, substantially as set forth.
(3. In a gate-operating mechanism, intergeared sectors, one of said sectors being connected to the gate, and the other sector havin g a hollow T-shape-d lever, the gate-latch having its actuating line or wire passed through said lever, and hand-levers with their connecting lines or wires connected to said latch-actuating line or Wire, substantially as set forth.
7. In gate=operating mechanism,intergeared sectors, one sectorbeing connected to the gate,- a flexible gate-latch having at its rear end a lateral projection or stud, a line or wire connected to said projection or stud and passed through the lever of said sector, and means connected with said line or wire for actuating the gate and latch, substantially as set forth.
8. In gate-operating mechanism an intergeared segment and sector, a bracket secured to the hinge-post, at the top, and adapted to receive the top hinge pintle or pivot carrying said segment, parallel inve1'ted-\l-shaped supports secured at their divergent ends to lugs on said bracket, said sector having a T-shaped lever with its transverse portion pivoted or hung in said supports, at their apices, and means for actuating said lever, substantially as specified.
