To all whom. it may concern.
Be it known that I, KNUD K. LEROL, J r., a
citizen of the United States, residing at Am herst, in the county of Fillmore and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gates.
Said invention has for its object to provide for the ready or convenient opening and closing of the gate; to control or retard the closing thereofas when, for instance, a heavy wind should be prevailing in the direction of the closing of the gate, as well as at other times; to provide for the proper retention of the gate in suitably-elevated position with relation t0 the ground, open or closed, as against sagging; to effect the ready compensating of slack in the gate-operating lines or wires, and to otherwise promote facility and convenience in the use of the gate.
Said invention consists of the combination and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the gate closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate open. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, the gate being closed. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detached View of the triangular gateactuating lever and latching and unlatching lever combined. Fig. 5 is a lateral edge view thereof. Fig. 6 is an enlarged view showing more particularly the combined upper gatehinge pintle and the fulcra for said triangular lever and the latch-actuating lever disassembled. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detached view of one of the drums, With its shaft, for actuating the gate and latch lever operating lines or wires and its adjusting-brackets. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of said first-named parts, more especially disclosing the sliding feature of said shaft permitted by its holding-screw. A lever 6, preferably of the general outline shown, being triangular, has passing about centrally therethrough at its base the upper one of the hinge-pintles 7, upon which said lever turns or fulcrums as the gate swings upon its hinges. The eye or socket member 7 of the upper hinge, substantially of plate form and standing edgewise to said lever 6, is slotted horizontally to receive and thus provide for forming a support for said lever at its base edge, said lever abutting at its forward edge against the rear end upright of the gate, thus providing for the actuation of the latter, as presently seen. Said lever is composed, preferably, of members 6 and 6", the central portion of the upper one being extended, as at 6 past the base of the triangle formed by said lever, said extension being deflected downward and having pivoted thereto one arm, 6 of a supplemental angular lever 6. Said latter lever is fulcrumed in place by means of a tubular extension or socket 6 of the forward edge of the plate 7 of the upper gate-hinge, receiving a pendent pivot or stud 6 of said lever. An arm 6 of said lever 6 by engagement at the prescribed time with a stop pin or projection 6 depending from the under side of the lever 6, controls the play or movement of the lever 6 as the latter lever is actuated as the gate swings upon its hinges, as in opening and closing the same. A third arm 6 of the lever 6 has an aperture or hole 6 to provide for the reception or engagement therewith of the bent end of a rod or stout wire 8, connected to and adapted to actuate the gate-latch 9, suitably pivoted upon the gate, said rod being suitably guided and retained in proper position upon the latter by a keeper or eyebolt or otherwise, as desired.
A continuous line or wire 10 has its ends connected, preferably, to pins 10, uniting the lever members 6 at their extreme angles, re-
spectively, the branches or separate lines thus formed then being extended oppositely in contact with and past a common roll, with which a pin 10", uniting the lever members at the intermediary angle thereof, may be provided. Said branch lines are connected to and wound a number of times around drums or cylinders 11, suitably supported upon the posts 1 4* above noted, respectively, with their uniting portion 1O directly spanning or encompassing the interval between said drums 01' cylinders and suitably held in place by and passed through an eye or keeper 12, secured to the hinge-post. Said drums or cylinders 11 have their shafts 11, terminating in suitable handles or cranks for their manual actuatiomextended loosely through said drums and supported, preferably, in brackets 11, pivoted at their lower ends laterally to the posts 1 4 for a purpose presently seen. Said cranked or handled shafts 11 are adapted by being loosely passed through the drums to be moved or slid longitudinally out of the way, for instance, of any unusually-extended body or load carried by a vehicle which may require to pass through the gateway, and are normally designed to occupy a position with their cranks or handles upstanding to be removed from interference by animals within or without the inclosure which the gate presupposes. The drums or cylinders are held normally to their said shafts by holding or binding screws 11, let into said drums flush with or below their peripheries and engaging or bearing upon said shafts, they of course being suitably loosened by known means when it is desired to move said shafts endwise, as aforesaid. The pivoted brackets 11", supporting said drums, are provided with laterally-extended slots 11 receiving set-screws 11 projecting from posts 4 4, whereby it will be noted that by properly moving said brackets after loosening said set-screws said drums can be accordingly moved so as to put their actuating lines or wires more or less under stress, as required to compensate slack.

The gate-post 1 has a keeper or catch 13 to receive or into which drops the free end of the latch 9, as in latching the gate, and preferably upon the same casting or plate bearing said catch or keeper is a cam projection 14:, up which rides a roll 15, carried by the forward end of the gate, as in closing the latter, to suitably support it at that point as against sagging. The posts 5 5 are also provided with means for the like support and retention of the gate in position when open, as by the employment of combined catches and cam projections 16 16, each combined catch and cam projection being in a single casting or piece, the roll and latch as the gate is about reachingits final open position engaging said cam projection and catch, respectively.
It will be noted, among other advantages of my invention, that especially in the passage of avehicle through the gateway or a person riding horseback the occupant of the former or the rider, as the case may be, would not be required to dismount to open the gate, the crank-shafts of the gate-actuating line-operating drums being readily or conveniently operated by such occupant or rider from the vehicle orhorseback. Also it is noted that it is obvious, as in closing the gate as also in opening it, that the operator having the gateactuating lines and drums under control via the handled shafts of the latter the opening and closing movement of the gate will not be interfered with by the action of an unusual or heavy wind or other cause.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as they may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and the latter still be protected.
I claim 1. In a gate, an angular lever fulcrumed upon the upper hinge-pintle and having an extension beyond its base, a supplemental lever pivoted upon the gate member of the upper hinge and actuated from said lever extension, means for actuating said first-named lever, and means, connecting with the gatelatch, actuated from said supplemental lever.
2. In a gate, an angular lever, an upper hinge with its pintle passing through said lever, said upper hinge having its gate member slotted to receive and uphold said lever, means for actuating said lever from a removed point, and a supplemental lever pivoted upon said hinge gate member and actuated from the aforesaid lever, and means connecting with the gate-latch, actuated from said supplemental lever.
3. Inagate, an angular lever, applied to the upper hinge-pintle and, itself, actuating a supplemental lever also pivoted to the upper hinge, and means, connecting with the gatelatch, actuated by said supplemental lever and means for actuating the first-referred-to lever, comprising a continuous line, with its ends connected to extreme angles or points of said lever and extended oppositely therefrom in contact with and past the intermediary angle of said first-referred-to lever and suitably arranged for manipulation from distant points.
4. In a gate, an angular lever having the upper hinge-pintle passing centrally through it, near the base, and comprising substantially duplicate members, with transverse pin connections therebetween, one at each of their respective angles and one intermediately of the latter, said lever having connected to the pin connections at the extreme angles or points thereof, the ends of a continuous line,
the branch members of the last-named being extended oppositely in contact with and past the intermediarypin connection, and manual lyactuated drums having said line Wound thereon, with the intermediary portion of said line continuous between said drums and guided and retained in position.
5. In a gate,a triangular lever mounted at its base upon the upper hinge-pintle and having an extension beyond said base provided with a stop-pin, asupplernental lever pivoted upon the gate member of said hinge and one arm thereof engaged by said stop-pin, said supplemental lever being actuated by the aforesaid lever, means connecting said supplemental lever to the gate-latch, and means for operating the first-named lever.
6. In a gate, an angular lever fulcrumed, upon the upper hinge-pintle, a supplemental lever also pivoted upon the upper hinge and actuated by the aforesaid lever, means connecting said supplemental lever and the gatelatch, winding-drums arranged in elevated position and supported upon sliding handled shafts and means of connection between the first-named lever and said drums.
7. In a gate, an angular lever fulcrumed upon the upper hinge-pintle, a supplemental lever actuated by the aforesaid lever and fulcrumed upon the gate member of said hinge, means effecting connection between said supplemental lever and the gate-latch, windingdrums having their shafts supported in pivoted brackets, with intermediate protracted slots receiving set-screws from supports suitably disposed, and means of connection between said drums and the firstreferred to lever.
