Letters .Patent No. 68,440, dated S'ptember 3, 1867. l
IMPROVEMENT IN GULTIVATOR-TEETH.
'IO ALL WHOM IT MAY' CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HIS/Ertl', of Norton Hill, in the county of Greene, and State of New York, have invented and made o. certain new and useful Improvement in Cultivator-Teoth; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exa-et description. of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of a enltivator fitted with my improved teeth.
Figure 2.s a section of the beam, attaching-bolt, and upper end of the tooth; and
Figure 3 is a front view of thesaid tooth.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. 4
Cultivator-teeth have heretofore been made so that they could be raised or lowered or stand at any desired :1n'gle,'bnt` the-teeth being rigid cannot glance off of a stone or other hard subst-ance without moving the entire cultivator, and, in turning around, the eultivator is liable to be broken or overturned by the sidey draught.
The nature of. my said invention consists-in a cnltivator-tooth or plough, attached by a vertical joint to the beam, so as to swing horizontally, inorder that the tooth may be free to turn slightly and avoid obstructions, and follow, at all times, the line of draught, sothat in turning there is no risk 0 the teeth being broken or the cultivator overturned. A i
These-teeth may be used singly or in gangs. I have shown, in the drawing, a triangular frame, a, to which my improved` teeth are attached, but said frame maybe oi' any ,desired size or shape. b is a plateattaehed to the beam a, and having a cylindrical pin, z', projecting downwards, and receiving the eye on the upper and forward end of the arm c of the cultivator-tooth d. c is a bolt passing through the cylindrical pin z', the head of which bolt sustains thearm e. By this 'construction a vertical joint is formed; upon which the coltivatortooth can swingV horizontally for the purposes before named. The arm c is to be extended backward and curved :lownwards and forwards, so that the share will be sustained in the inclined position shown. the point being )early vertically below the bolt e, which facilitates `the turningof the tooth according to-the direction of the 'lranght. A stopfmay be provided to prevent the tooth swinging all the way around.
What I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cultivator-tooth or plough-attached by a vertical joint to the beam, so as to swing horizontally, as and for the purposes set fort-ln Inv witness whereof Ihave hereunto set my signature this seventeenth day of June, A. D. 1867.
