IMPROVEMENT IN ROLLING-GUTTERS FOR PLOUGHS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, J. H. SHERMAN, of the city of Galeshurg, in the county of Keck, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolling-Coulters or Cutters for Ploughs and Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. fulland exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the-letters of reference thereon, which are made part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view, and

Figure 2 a top view. I

Similar letters of reference represent similar parts in the two figures.

The nature of my invention consists in hanging the cutting-wheels or blade in a frame, separate from the standard, but attached thereto by means of sockets, or a socket, through which the standard passes, causing the cutting-wheel or blade to follow behind the standard, and, from the form of the sockets, to have a lateral play, while the standard is clamped fast to the beam of the plough or other implement.

To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A, (see figures,) represents the cutting-wheel or blade; 8 8 its flanges; and Z Z itsjournal, all made in the usual form. B B is a metal frame, in the backpart of which the cutter is hung upon the journal Z. In the front part of the frame are sockets C 0, through which the standard D passes. The sides of'the frame are made triangular, and in the form represented in fig. 1, as the best for lightness and strength, with two sockets to receive the standard, but this form is not essential. The sockets, fig. 2, are narrowest at the front part it, where they are of such width as to fit the edge of the standard D. The back part it of the sockets, is of such width as to allow the desired lateral. play of the frame about the standard. The frame is kept in place upon the standard by pins through the latter, at q fig. 1. The standard D is fastened to the-beam E, by means of a clamp, F, in common use for such purpose.

The advantages of the foregoing improvement, besides simplicity and oheapness, are that the coulter or cutter is self-adjusting, following invariably the line of draught; and that it cannot, like the swivel or castercutter, swing round in front of the standard so as to be troublesome in turning or drawing the plough back.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The frame B B, separate from the standard, but attached to it by means of sockets or socket, allowing a. lateral play of the frameabout the standard, substantially as set forth.

2. The form of sockets C C, fitting the standard at its front edge, but sufficiently open at the back part to allow a lateral swing of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
