IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ROLLER, STALK-GUTTER, AND MARKER.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. W. DILLY, of Roseville, in the county of Warren, andSt-ate of Illinois, have invented a. new and useful Combined Marker, Roller, and Stalk-Cutter, for rolling ground, for marking out corn-ground for planting, and for cutting up corn-stalks to prepare ground for ploughing; and I do hereby declare that the following is at full, clear, and exact description of the same, its construction and operation, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure-1 is a perspective view, and
Figures. 3, add 4 are detached sectional views.
To enahleothers to construct and operate my machine I proceed to the following explanation:
I first construct a rectangular frame, A A A A, fig. 1, on which is supported the seat B, on the braces C C. Across'sa'id frame are the shafts D D, fig. 1, for working three horses, one between them and one on each side. Beneath this frame, and supported by the arms K K, fig. 1, are the rollers L L. These rollers, two in number, are constructed of metal, and are hollow, and made in five sections each, so they may be taken apart to attach the knives, or for other purposes. The manner of connecting these sections will be seen at fig. 2, where two sections are represented. These sections are cast with projections O 0 Q0, through which the rods R R R R pass, and these being screwed up tight, hold the whole thing together. In this plain condition it may be used for ro ling ground. For marking out corn-ground the plates N, fig. 3, are bolted on the rollers at suitable distances apart, and the edges of them surrounding the rollers, as at N N, fig. 1, it is ready for that purpose. For cutting stalks-the knives P P P, fig. 1, are attnchedto arms, which extend through the metal, and are bolted on the inside of rollers with screws; it is then ready for cutting stalks. The journal on which the rollers revolve is a. square plug, V, fig. 4, and passes through the arms K K K, fig. 1, and can easily be changed for a new one when worn. The boxing to put in the end of t-herollors is constructed as at S, fig. 4. The square end being driven in the roller, the journal V is inserted in the other-end, which has opening for that purpose, and
.this boxing may be removed, when worn, and replaced by new at little expense. Should the rollers be too heavy when used for cutting stalks, the inner sections may be taken out, and the outside sections are provided with holes X X X, into which the knife-shanks may be screwed, and the arms K K removed, or moved closer, to accommodate the change.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rollers L L, cutters P P, journal S, and frame A, combined in the manner described, and arranged substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
