DAVID H. ALLEN, OF MIAMISBURG, OHIO.
SOAP-SUSPENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 684,033, dated OCtOlOBI' 8, 1901.
Application filed J'nly 2'7, 1900. Serial No. 25,059. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID H. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miamisburg, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap-Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for conveniently and safely holding a to cake of soap in proximity to a washbowl of a standard washstand for hotels, public washrooms, or otherwise to prevent its being carried away, Wasted by abuse, or misplaced.
The features of my invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, illustrating it as secured to a stationary 2o washstand. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the soap-holding device.
A represents a stationary washstand having a bowl B.
0 represents a standard attached to the 2 5 washstand at the rear of the bowl, having a 0 outer end of this gooseneck is suspended a chain G, to the free endof which is attached the cake of soap H. I have devised a particular means for properly holding this soap on a chain, which forms the subject-matter of a separate application filed of an even date herewith.
In the center of the standard is a bolt I, tapping through the bottom of the washstand interiorly into the standard. To the upper o end of this bolt is attached a coil-spring J, or
it may be secured to the base of the standard, the other end of said spring being secured to a pin 1) on the journal-socket E, as shown in Fig. 2. The journal-ball D has a slot 0 at its upper end, through which the pin 1) slides and which limits the movement of the journal-socket E. This spring is attached in such a manner that its normal tendency is to hold it in either the vertical po- 50 sition shown in Fig. 1 or the horizontal position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. When it is desired to use the soap, the arm F is pulled into the horizontal position indicated in dotted lin es,Fig. 1. The upper end of the spring will travel with the movement of the socket on the ball, so that when the lever is past the dead center the spring will automatically strain the lever to its horizontal position over the bowl, and when the user is through with the soap an upward push will return the arm to the vertical position, lifting the soap out of the bowl into a position of safety above the stand. When the eye 17 engages one wall of the slot 0, it will act as astop to determine the vertical position of the lever, and when the eye engages the other wall of the slot it will act as a stop to determine the horizontal position of the lever. Of course various forms of stops could be devised to perform the same function.
It is evident that many forms of leverage, horizontal or vertical, or various arrange ments of the same thing differing in detail from the form shown and described could be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, I claim-= 1. In combination with a washstand, a standard arranged adjacent to the washbowl, a lever fulcrumed thereon normally above said washbowl and adapted to be bent and held horizontally over said bowl, and a chain supporting a bar of soap attached to the outer end of said lever, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a washstand, a standard, a lever fulcrumed thereto normally held with its free end away from the washbowl, a chain attached to the said free end of the lover, a cake of soap attached to the other end of the chain, and means for swinging the lever over the bowl, substantially as specificd.
3. Incombination with a washstand, a standard arranged adjacent to the washbowl, a lever fulcrumed to said standard, a chain supporting a cake of soap suspended from the outer end of said lever, the said lever being normally at one side of the .bowl and mov able to a horizontal position over the same,- and a spring adapted to strain said lever toward the. extreme ends of its movement to and from said bowl, substantially as described.
4. In combination with a washstand, a
standard arranged adjacent to the wnshbowl, mine the limits of movement of said lever IO 2L lever fulcrumed to said standard, a chain substantially as described.
supporting a cake of soap suspended from In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the outer end of said lever, said lever being my hand. normally at one side of the bowl, and mov- DAVID IL ALLEN able to a horizontal position over the same, a
spring adapted to strain said lever toward \Vitnesses:
the extreme ends of its movement to and OLIVER B. RAISER, from said bowl, and stops adapted to deter- O. LOVELL BUTLER.
